If BBC Weather will not open, load a forecast, find your location or update its widget, start with the low-risk checks: test the service in a browser, switch networks, restart your device, update the app and clear its cache. The cause may be a phone setting, connection, widget restriction or temporary BBC-side fault—not necessarily a general outage.
First, identify what is failing
Match the symptom to the relevant fix rather than changing several settings at once:
- App crashes or will not open: restart the device, update the app, then force-stop it and clear its cache.
- Blank screen, endless loading or stale forecast: test another website, compare Wi-Fi with mobile data, and check BBC Weather in a browser.
- Current location unavailable: check the phone’s Location setting and BBC Weather’s app permission; try searching for a place manually.
- Widget is blank or outdated, but the app works: refresh in the app, then remove and re-add the widget and review background restrictions.
- Cannot install or update: check Android compatibility, available storage and Google Play.
- Only one town fails: search for another place. A problem with one location does not establish that the entire app is down.
For most symptoms, work through the low-risk steps below before clearing app data or reinstalling.
Check whether the problem is BBC-side or on your device
Open BBC Weather in a mobile browser and try another BBC service or website. Then switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and, if possible, compare with another Android device. If the app fails only on one phone or one connection, that points toward a local setting or network path; it does not prove the precise cause. If BBC services also fail, check the BBC Help Center, which says it may acknowledge technical glitches at the top of the site. The available BBC guidance does not confirm a BBC Weather-specific outage on August 18, 2026, so do not assume there is one from a single app failure.

If BBC Weather works on Wi-Fi but not mobile data, check whether mobile data is enabled for the app in Android settings and whether other apps can use mobile data. Temporarily disable a VPN to test whether it is affecting the connection. Try another Wi-Fi network if available; restart your router only if other websites or apps are failing too.
Restart the device and update the app
Restart Android
- Close BBC Weather.
- Restart your phone or tablet.
- Open the app and check whether the forecast loads.
Update BBC Weather in Google Play
- Open Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture, then Manage apps & device.
- Under available updates, update BBC Weather.
BBC advises users to update its apps manually when automatic updating is disabled. Google also recommends checking for an Android system update; menu names vary, but look under Settings > System > Software update or your device’s equivalent. The official Google Play listing showed an update dated June 29, 2026, but does not establish that update as a fix for any particular fault. Install the update Google Play offers rather than relying on an old version number. If Google Play cannot update any apps, the issue may be with Play Store, the account, storage or the network rather than BBC Weather alone.
Force-stop BBC Weather and clear its cache
Force-stop the app
- Open Settings > Apps or Apps & notifications.
- Select BBC Weather and tap Force stop.
- Reopen the app.
On some phones, you can reach the app’s information screen by touching and holding its icon and tapping App info. Manufacturers use different labels and layouts.

Clear temporary files
- Open Settings > Apps > BBC Weather.
- Tap Storage or Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache, then reopen BBC Weather.
Cache contains temporary files, so clearing it is the lower-risk storage reset. If the problem remains, Android may offer Clear storage, Clear data or Clear storage and cache. This is more disruptive: it may remove locally stored settings or saved locations and require you to set the app up again. Try it only after clearing the cache. If manually selected towns appear but “Use my location” does not work, focus on permissions rather than treating it as a complete app outage.
- Touch and hold the BBC Weather icon and tap App info, or open Settings > Apps > BBC Weather.
- Tap Permissions > Location.
- Choose an appropriate permission, such as Allow only while using the app, and enable Use precise location if that option is available and you want a more exact nearby forecast.
- Check that the phone-wide Location setting is on. On many devices, this is under Settings > Location.
- Reopen BBC Weather and try location detection again. If it still fails, search for your town or city manually.
Android 12 and later can distinguish approximate from precise location. Precise access may help narrow the nearest forecast, but the evidence does not establish that it is mandatory for every app function. Location accuracy can also be affected indoors or where GPS signals are obstructed. See Google’s instructions for app location permissions, app permissions and Android location settings.

Troubleshoot the widget separately
A working app does not guarantee a working home-screen widget. BBC’s Google Play listing says its widget may request location access while the app is closed or not in use so it can display an up-to-date forecast. Background activity, battery restrictions, an old selected location, a stale widget process, the launcher or a temporary connection issue can all be relevant; there is no single battery-settings path for every Android phone.
- Open BBC Weather itself and refresh the forecast.
- Confirm the correct location is selected in the app.
- Remove the widget from the home screen.
- Restart the phone, then add the widget again from the launcher’s widget picker.
- If it still stops updating, review BBC Weather’s battery or background-activity setting and location permission. Available options depend on Android version and manufacturer; do not assume that Allow all the time is required on every device.
Battery-saver modes and manufacturer background restrictions can delay widget refreshes. Allowing more background activity may improve updates, but can have privacy or battery trade-offs.

Resynchronize date and time
Try this secondary step if the app still cannot sync and the device clock may be wrong:

- Open Settings > System > Date & time, or the equivalent on your phone.
- Turn off Automatic time zone and Automatic date & time.
- Set the date and time incorrectly.
- Turn both automatic options back on.
Google includes this reset in its general app troubleshooting advice. Settings may be named differently on your device.

Before using Clear data or uninstalling, note any saved places or preferences you may need to restore. Clearing storage can remove locally stored information; Google also warns that uninstalling erases data saved in the app. Neither action is guaranteed to fix every fault.
- Confirm BBC Weather is available in Google Play for your account and device.
- Record any locations or preferences you want to set up again.
- Uninstall BBC Weather, then restart the device.
- Reinstall it from the official Google Play listing.
- Open the app, grant the permissions you want to use and set up your locations again.
Avoid making an unofficial APK download your default fix: it carries security, authenticity, compatibility and update risks.

If BBC Weather will not install or update
BBC’s general app-support page lists Android 7.0 or later for installations outside the UK. That is BBC’s stated minimum, not a guarantee that every device running Android 7 has identical compatibility. Check your version under Settings > About phone, About device or System > About phone; names vary by manufacturer. See BBC’s supported-device guidance.
Also check available storage and whether Google Play can install or update other apps. BBC says app availability can depend on the country or region assigned to your Google Play account, not just your physical location; this is one possibility, not a universal explanation for an installation failure. Its country and region guidance explains where to check. A work-managed or parental-control device may also restrict installation or permissions.
Use BBC Weather in a browser or contact BBC
If the app remains unavailable, open BBC.com or BBC Weather in Chrome or another current mobile browser, then search for a town or use the site’s location option. You can add a browser shortcut to your home screen if useful. BBC support recommends its website on a mobile device as an alternative when app problems persist; see its technical-problem guidance.
If only BBC Weather remains broken after the device and connection checks, contact the BBC technical support category. The Google Play listing provides [email protected] as a contact, but verify that address on the live listing before using it. Include your device model, Android version, app symptom and steps already tried; do not send sensitive information such as account passwords.
