ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1 and M2 Android 10 Update: Stable Status, Beta Builds, and Safe Installation

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: ASUS made Android 10 beta or manual firmware available for some ZenFone Max Pro M1 and M2 variants, but the available record does not establish a universal stable OTA rollout for either phone. A downloadable ASUS file is not, by itself, proof of a stable update for every region. Check the exact model and regional SKU before considering any installation.

Android 10 status for the ZenFone Max Pro M1 and M2

ASUS support discussions documented Android 10 beta or manual firmware for parts of the Max Pro series. They do not establish that every M1 and M2 variant received a final, stable update through the phone’s normal updater. In June 2020, an ASUS community response said there was no stable-release date to share and pointed users to beta firmware. A later M2 discussion described the available package as beta rather than FOTA.

Phone What the record establishes Delivery and regional qualification
ZenFone Max Pro M1 Android 10 beta-related firmware was documented. An AOSP/developer image was also discussed. Manual installation was described; the AOSP image was limited to WW SKU and excluded JP. This does not establish a stable OTA for all M1 variants. ASUS ZenTalk’s M1 Android 10 discussion
ZenFone Max Pro M2 Android 10 beta/manual firmware was discussed, including build WW_17.2018.2008.432, identified in the discussion as beta. The cited discussion says the package was not delivered through FOTA; availability should not be generalized across M2 regional variants. ASUS ZenTalk’s M2 FOTA and stable-versus-beta discussion
All regional variants A universal stable Android 10 rollout is not established by these records. Firmware availability depends on the exact model and SKU; do not treat related models or regions as interchangeable.

ASUS forum references include M1 models ZB601KL and ZB602KL, and M2 models ZB630KL and ZB631KL. ASUS’s separate support pages and regional firmware differences matter: M1 firmware is not M2 firmware, and a file for one regional SKU is not automatically suitable for another. The June 2020 ASUS ZenTalk status discussion records the lack of a stable date at that time.

What “Android 10 update” can mean

  • OTA/FOTA: Firmware delivered by the phone’s system updater. This is the usual meaning of a rollout, but the cited discussions do not verify a universal stable OTA for these phones.
  • Manual official firmware: A file obtained from ASUS and applied locally. ASUS support described this route for beta firmware; hosting or linking a file does not make it a stable OTA.
  • Beta firmware: Test software that can have bugs, incomplete features, or compatibility problems. The cited M2 discussion described WW_17.2018.2008.432 as beta, not as a stable release.
  • AOSP/developer image: A build closer to the Android Open Source Project baseline and aimed at development or testing, rather than necessarily being a polished consumer release. The M1 image discussed by ASUS was specified for WW SKU and excluded JP.

Historical milestones

  • June 7–8, 2020: Users asked ASUS about a stable Android 10 date. The ASUS community response said there was no date to share and referred users to beta firmware. Read the ASUS ZenTalk discussion.
  • July 2020: An ASUS release note for the M1 ZB602KL WW build referenced a fix for a problem in which the latest Android Pie image could not upgrade to Android 10. That documents an upgrade-path issue, not a final-release announcement. Read the release note.
  • October 2020: ASUS support instructions still described installing the Android 10 beta manually after first updating Android 9. Read the installation discussion.
  • December 2020: An M2 discussion continued to distinguish beta firmware from stable FOTA. Read the M2 discussion.
  • 2021 onward: ASUS forum posts continued to discuss model- and SKU-specific availability; they do not turn the beta or developer files into evidence of a universal stable rollout. See the M1 discussion.

Check the model and regional SKU before downloading

  1. On the phone, open Settings → System → About phone → Model and record the model number. Menu wording can vary by installed software.
  2. Identify the firmware region/SKU shown for the device or its installed firmware, such as WW, IN, or JP. Do not assume “WW” means any internationally sold phone.
  3. On the ASUS support page, confirm that the page and firmware package name match the exact model and region you have.
  4. Check the package description to determine whether it is beta, AOSP/developer, downgrade, or ordinary firmware. If its type or compatibility is unclear, do not install it.

Warning: Never install firmware for a different model or regional SKU. ASUS forum guidance specifically cautioned a Max Pro M1 WW user against installing a Max Pro M2 JP package. A mismatched file can fail verification, remove functions, or leave the phone unable to boot. A shared product name or similar hardware is not proof of compatibility. See the ASUS ZenTalk cross-SKU warning.

How ASUS’s historical manual beta procedure worked

The steps below describe the procedure ASUS support gave for the historical beta path. They are not a recommendation to install an old beta now, and they should not be used with a package whose model, SKU, or file type has not been confirmed.

  1. Open the ASUS support page for the exact phone model and confirm regional compatibility.
  2. Bring the phone to the latest Android 9 firmware required by ASUS. The cited instructions specified this prerequisite for the beta procedure.
  3. Download only the matching Android 10 beta/manual firmware from ASUS, if it is still offered and its compatibility is clear.
  4. Copy the firmware file to the root level of the phone’s internal storage, not inside a folder. Do not rename or extract it unless ASUS’s instructions for that exact package say to do so.
  5. Reboot the phone and look for the system-update notification.
  6. If the notification appears and the package is verified for the device, follow the on-screen prompts. Keep the phone powered and do not interrupt installation.

ASUS described this local-file method in its historical M1 beta installation instructions. Those instructions do not establish a universal command-line or fastboot method, so do not substitute generic flashing commands.

If no update notification appears

  • Recheck the model number and SKU against the package; distinguish M1 from M2 and WW from IN or JP.
  • Confirm Android 9 is at the prerequisite firmware level specified for that beta.
  • Make sure the file is at the root of internal storage and that its name and archive format have not been changed.
  • Remove duplicate or conflicting firmware files, then reboot after copying the intended file.
  • Root access, a custom recovery, or other modified system software may interfere with verification; do not try to bypass a failed check with an unrelated package.
  • Use the ASUS support page for the precise model rather than a third-party download mirror. If ASUS no longer provides a verifiable matching file, stop rather than forcing installation.

The absence of a notification does not prove that a stable OTA was missed: the documented Android 10 route was often manual beta firmware, and support records do not verify a universal stable rollout.

Before installing: weigh the risk and the benefit

A beta may be relevant to someone testing software or willing to troubleshoot, but it is a poor fit for a phone that must work reliably every day. Do not proceed unless you can tolerate bugs and have a recovery plan.

  • Back up personal data first; updating or recovering firmware can erase it.
  • Ensure the battery is sufficiently charged and there is room for the download and installation.
  • Confirm whether the device is rooted, modified, or using a custom recovery, and understand that these changes can complicate installation.
  • Do not install a package from an unofficial mirror if its origin and integrity cannot be verified.
  • Consider whether the exact file provides the Android version you want without implying current security patches or ongoing ASUS support.

Android 10 is an older Android release. The operating-system version alone does not show the device’s security-patch date, Google Play system update status, app compatibility, or whether ASUS still supports the phone. Check those separately in the device settings and current ASUS support information; an Android 10 installation should not be treated as making the phone current or secure.

If Android 10 causes problems or you need Android 9 again

Beta software can bring app crashes, battery drain, missing features, hardware incompatibility, or boot and verification failures. A forum response discussing return to Android 9 points users to an ASUS downgrade file and a microSD-card-based process. The file and procedure must match the exact model and SKU; a downgrade may erase data. See the ASUS downgrade discussion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use a generic downgrade package or recovery sequence. If the phone cannot boot or the correct official package is no longer available, seek model-specific ASUS service guidance rather than flashing firmware for a related device.

What to do if your Max Pro is still on Android 9

If your M1 or M2 remains on Android 9, do not assume you missed a broadly distributed stable Android 10 OTA. The documented options were model- and region-dependent beta/manual firmware, plus an M1 AOSP/developer image with a stated WW-only limitation. Unless ASUS’s current support page provides a verified package for your exact device and identifies its type, staying on the installed firmware is safer than trying a file intended for another variant.
