Accelerate Great was a real NBN Co wholesale-speed program launched on 14 September 2025—not 14 September 2026. It raised selected speed tiers and added residential multi-gigabit services, mainly for premises using Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC). It was not a universal free upgrade: your address, access technology, retail provider and plan determine what you can order or receive.
NBN Co made the affected products available to participating providers without an additional wholesale charge. That does not guarantee an automatic retail upgrade or unchanged bill, because providers set customer plans, prices, promotions and hardware terms.
What Accelerate Great changed
Accelerate Great was a product and network-capacity initiative rather than one nationwide fibre-construction project. NBN Co increased the capability of selected existing wholesale tiers, introduced residential services up to 2,000 Mbps, and aimed to make FTTP and HFC connections more valuable as data use rose. NBN reported average monthly data use per connected premises increasing from 460 GB in June 2024 to 508 GB in June 2025.
The launch announcement is documented by NBN Co, while the ACCC confirmed the major tier changes.

Old and new residential speed tiers
| Previous wholesale tier | Accelerated or new tier | Typical access technology |
|---|---|---|
| 100/20 Mbps | 500/50 Mbps | Eligible FTTP or HFC |
| 250/25 Mbps | 750/50 Mbps | Eligible FTTP or HFC |
| 500/50 Mbps | Approximately 1,000/100 Mbps | Eligible FTTP or HFC |
| New Home Hyperfast | Up to 2,000/200 Mbps on FTTP; up to 2,000/100 Mbps on HFC | Eligible FTTP or HFC |
These are wholesale product capabilities, not a promise that a speed test will always show the maximum. Upload rates differ materially between FTTP and HFC. NBN also introduced a business 2,000/500 Mbps product for eligible FTTP premises; that is a separate business service, not the residential Home Hyperfast offer.
Who can get the faster services?
FTTP
Fibre to the Premises runs fibre directly to the property and generally supports the broadest range of Accelerate Great tiers, including the 2,000/200 Mbps residential product where the address and provider qualify.
HFC
Hybrid Fibre Coaxial uses fibre to a neighbourhood node and coaxial cable to the premises. It supports many accelerated tiers, but qualification and upload limits can differ from FTTP. Home Hyperfast on HFC is up to 2,000/100 Mbps.
FTTN, FTTC and FTTB
Fibre to the Node, Fibre to the Curb and Fibre to the Building were not broadly converted to 500 Mbps or 2,000 Mbps by Accelerate Great itself. Some premises can first move to FTTP through an NBN fibre-upgrade pathway, usually by ordering a qualifying plan. NBN has announced changes intended to relax some FTTC-to-FTTP eligibility requirements from 1 July 2026; check the current address result rather than assuming eligibility.

Fixed Wireless and Sky Muster
The accelerated FTTP/HFC products do not apply to fixed-wireless or Sky Muster satellite services. Use NBN’s current speed-plan and technology information to check the technology serving your address.
Was the upgrade automatic?
There was no single national migration rule. Some customers on qualifying legacy tiers were moved automatically when their provider implemented the new wholesale product. Others had to select a new retail plan, particularly for 750 Mbps, 1,000 Mbps or 2,000 Mbps services.
Aussie Broadband says eligible customers on its 100/20, 250/25 and 1,000/50 plans were automatically moved to corresponding accelerated tiers at no additional cost. That is an example of one provider’s policy, not evidence that every ISP treated every customer the same. Ask your provider:
- Whether your exact plan was migrated automatically.
- Whether the new speed is available at your address.
- Whether changing tiers changes the monthly price, contract or modem terms.
- Whether the NBN connection box or an appointment needs to be updated.
What “no extra wholesale cost” means for your bill
NBN Co’s wholesale charge is paid by the retail service provider. The retail price is set by your ISP. The accelerated products were made available to participating providers without an additional wholesale charge, but a provider could still reprice a plan, end a discount, change the product name, charge for hardware or require a new contract.

For example, Telstra announced increases of A$4 to A$5 per month for some NBN home and small-business plans from 1 July 2026. That is a Telstra retail change, not an NBN-wide Accelerate Great fee. Leaptel has also published provider-specific July 2026 pricing changes. Check the provider’s notice and checkout page for the ongoing price, not only an introductory promotion.
Do you need a new modem or NBN box?
Not automatically. The NBN Network Termination Device (NTD) is the connection box linking the access network to your router; a faster wholesale tier does not become available simply by buying a faster router. Your provider may determine that the NTD, service port or installation needs work.
High-speed plans can nevertheless expose limits in your home network. Check:
- The router’s WAN port and every LAN port. A 2,000 Mbps service needs multi-gigabit ports; a 1 Gbps port can bottleneck it.
- Whether the router supports Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 and has suitable channel conditions. Wi-Fi is shared radio capacity, not a guaranteed 2,000 Mbps link.
- Ethernet cable quality and the computer or device’s network adapter.
- Whether switches, mesh nodes and access points also support the required speed.
- Any modem supplied, required or charged for by the provider.
NBN has also discussed more energy-efficient customer-premises equipment for higher-speed services, but equipment availability and replacement policy remain provider- and service-specific.

What speed is enough for a household?
500 Mbps: the practical choice for many homes
A 500/50 Mbps service can handle several simultaneous 4K streams, video calls, remote work, cloud applications, smart-home devices and large game downloads. For a typical family, the limiting factor is often Wi-Fi coverage or the provider’s evening capacity rather than the headline access speed.
750 Mbps to 1,000 Mbps: useful for heavier concurrency
Consider 750/50 or approximately 1,000/100 Mbps when a large household regularly transfers large files, runs multiple cloud backups, downloads several games at once, produces video or photography, or has many simultaneous high-use sessions. Upload speed may matter more than another few hundred megabits of download capacity.
2,000 Mbps: a specialist service
Home Hyperfast can make sense for a professional home studio, a small business, multiple high-throughput wired workstations, large local-server or cloud workflows, or a household that can genuinely distribute more than 1 Gbps. A single phone or laptop on Wi-Fi is unlikely to use the full service. A conventional gigabit router, switch or device will prevent that.
Compare more than download speed: upload rate, typical evening speed, latency, data allowance, ongoing price, contract, modem cost, support, static-IP availability and the provider’s fault handling. A residential 2,000/200 FTTP plan is not equivalent to a business 2,000/500 FTTP product.

Why a speed test may be lower than the plan
Advertised and wholesale speeds describe a service capability. Actual throughput can vary with evening congestion, the ISP’s network, HFC segment capacity, Wi-Fi interference, router placement, simultaneous users, device hardware, Ethernet ports, test-server capacity and service qualification. NBN explains these factors in its guidance on actual performance and demand.
Test in this order before concluding that the NBN service is faulty:
- Connect one capable computer directly to the router with wired Ethernet.
- Confirm the router’s WAN and LAN ports, the computer adapter and the Ethernet cable support the plan speed.
- Stop other downloads, backups, streams and VPN traffic.
- Run more than one test server, including during the provider’s stated busy period.
- Confirm whether the plan is 1,000/100, 1,000/50 or another product, and read its typical-evening-speed disclosure.
If you are on FTTN or FTTC
Do not confuse a speed-plan change with a physical access upgrade. Accelerate Great raises selected FTTP/HFC products; it does not turn copper into fibre. NBN’s Fibre Connect program has delivered FTTP upgrades to eligible copper-based premises, often linked to ordering a qualifying higher-speed plan. NBN reported more than one million Fibre Connect upgrades by April 2026 and about 47,000 premises upgrading to fibre per month. A separate targeted program addresses selected locations and reliability issues.
For an FTTC address, check the current upgrade rules and qualification at NBN’s FTTC-to-FTTP update. You cannot order the standard 2,000 Mbps FTTP/HFC product directly over FTTC.
How to check your own address and plan
- Use NBN’s address and speed-plan information to identify the access technology and available wholesale tiers.
- Ask your provider to confirm the exact retail plan, download/upload rate and whether migration is automatic.
- Compare the ongoing monthly price after any promotion, plus modem, activation, relocation and cancellation terms.
- Check typical evening speed, latency, data allowance, support, static-IP options and any bundled phone or mobile discounts.
- If considering 2,000 Mbps, verify that the router, switches, mesh equipment and at least one wired device have multi-gigabit ports.
- Keep written confirmation of any plan change and check the first bill for repricing or ended discounts.
Providers publish their own availability and terms. Examples include Aussie Broadband’s plans, Leaptel’s plans and Telstra’s pricing notices. Prices and promotions can change, so use the checkout page on the day you order.
What the rollout means in practice
NBN reported that by December 2025, about 41% of services were on wholesale plans offering at least 100 Mbps and 31% on plans offering at least 500 Mbps. It also reported more than 12,300 higher-speed orders per week after launch and more than 113,000 orders since 14 September 2025 as of 1 December 2025. Those figures describe NBN’s reported national adoption, not a guarantee for an individual address.
The Bottom Line
For an eligible FTTP or HFC home, 500 Mbps is the sensible starting point for most households; 750 Mbps or 1,000 Mbps suits heavier simultaneous use, and 2,000 Mbps is mainly for specialist, multi-gigabit networks. Confirm the access technology, provider migration policy, upload speed, ongoing retail price and in-home hardware before switching.
