msth3ge.dll is a 32-bit language-related DLL associated with Lingsoft CTAPI3 for German. When Windows reports that msth3ge.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the application that requested it instead of copying a random DLL into a Windows folder.

msth3ge.dll identification

Item Verified information
File name msth3ge.dll
Associated software Lingsoft CTAPI3 for German
Developer shown in public metadata Lingsoft, Inc.
File type Win32, 32-bit DLL
Windows component No evidence shows that it is a standard Windows System32 component
Office connection Microsoft Office records list the filename among German proofing and thesaurus files
Current standalone download No verified current official Lingsoft redistributable was located

Historical public records associate this filename with Lingsoft language technology. Microsoft records also show it in German Office proofing files, alongside msth7ge.dll. That does not prove that every copy of the file came from Office, so the calling application must be identified before you reinstall anything.

A 32-bit DLL can be used normally by a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows. The Windows architecture and the application architecture do not always match.

Before changing anything, identify the caller

The correct repair depends on which program is loading the DLL. It may be an older Office installation, a German proofing component, or a legacy application that bundled Lingsoft technology.

Check the error dialog

Write down:

  • The executable or application named in the message
  • Whether the error appears during startup or only during German spelling, grammar, or thesaurus use
  • Whether the problem began after an Office repair, update, language change, antivirus event, or cleanup
  • Whether the message says missing, corrupted, could not be loaded, or not designed to run on Windows

If Word, Outlook, or another Office program is named, start with the Office repair steps below. If an older program has its own name in the dialog, repair that program instead.

Search for the file without downloading it

  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. In the search box, type msth3ge.dll.
  4. Wait for the search to finish.
  5. Right-click any result and select Open file location.
  6. Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs if present.

A file inside the application’s own folder or an Office language directory is more relevant than a copy in a temporary folder, Downloads, or an unfamiliar user-profile directory. Do not assume that a file is safe simply because its name is correct.

If the file exists, note its full path. If it is in a suspicious location, do not run it or move it. Scan the location with Windows Security and continue repairing the parent application.

Fix 1: Repair Office and its German proofing tools

This is the most likely path when the error appears in Word, Outlook, or another older Office component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the Office language status

  1. Open Word or another Office application.
  2. Select File.
  3. Select Options.
  4. Select Language.
  5. Look under Office authoring languages and proofing.
  6. Select German if it is listed.
  7. If the status says Proofing available, install the proofing tools.
  8. If German is absent, select Add a Language, choose German, and install it.
  9. Close every Office application.
  10. Reopen Office and test German spelling or thesaurus functions.

Microsoft’s Office language settings explain the proofing status and language controls.

If you use Microsoft 365 or a supported Office release, install the German Language Accessory Pack from Microsoft. Choose the package that matches the installed Office architecture, either 32-bit or 64-bit. The Microsoft Language Accessory Pack supplies language and proofing components rather than an isolated DLL.

Repair the Office installation

  1. Close Word, Outlook, Excel, and all other Office applications.
  2. Press Windows key + R.
  3. Type appwiz.cpl.
  4. Press Enter.
  5. Select Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 in the list.
  6. Select Change.
  7. Choose Repair or Online Repair, if offered.
  8. Follow the prompts.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Test the application again.

On newer installations, use:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find Microsoft 365 or Office.
  5. Select its three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.

Microsoft documents these choices in its guide to repairing apps and programs.

If repair completes but German proofing still fails, remove and reinstall the German language component. Do not place a downloaded copy of msth3ge.dll in the Office folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the legacy application

If the error names an older language tool or another program, use that program’s installer.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find the application associated with the error.
  5. Select it.
  6. Choose Change, Repair, or Modify if available.
  7. Select the German language, thesaurus, or proofing feature if the installer offers feature choices.
  8. Complete the repair.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Launch the original application.

If no repair option exists, uninstall the application from the same list and reinstall it from its original publisher, installation media, or a trusted organizational software source. Save application data first if the program stores documents or custom dictionaries locally.

Do not substitute a DLL from another program. Two files with the same name can belong to different packages, versions, or architectures.

If the program was installed through a launcher, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Scan files function before uninstalling it. The correct replacement is the application’s own package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined the file. This is especially important if the file disappeared suddenly after a scan.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections related to the application or msth3ge.dll.
  5. Open a detection to see its original path and status.
  6. Compare that path with the application’s normal installation directory.
  7. Check the file’s publisher and digital signature when available.

Restore a quarantined file only when the parent application, path, publisher, and signature are trustworthy and you have a strong reason to believe the detection was incorrect. Microsoft explains the risks of restoring quarantined items in its guide to Protection History.

If the file was in a temporary folder, startup location, or an unexpected user directory, do not restore it merely because the filename is familiar. Reinstall the parent application from its legitimate installer instead.

After removing or restoring an item, run a full scan:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Choose Full scan.
  5. Select Scan now.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

msth3ge.dll is not established as a standard Windows system file, so system repair commands may not restore it directly. They are still appropriate when the DLL error appears with broader Windows corruption, damaged built-in applications, failed updates, or other missing system files.

Run DISM first, then System File Checker.

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the application again.

DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses. Microsoft provides the command sequence in its System File Checker guidance.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM will not replace a missing Office language component or a file owned by an old third-party application.

If these commands report that they could not repair files, run Windows Update, restart the computer, and repeat the sequence once. If the problem began after a major system change and a restore point is available, review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually comparing long SFC and DISM logs can make it difficult to determine which issue actually changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems and show what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, while reinstalling the affected Office or legacy application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned DLL.

Fix 5: Check architecture and version compatibility

A 32-bit application needs its compatible 32-bit language component, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing a 64-bit package into a 32-bit program, or mixing files from unrelated releases, can cause errors such as:

  • The procedure entry point could not be located
  • The file is not designed to run on Windows
  • The application failed to start
  • Another dependent DLL is missing

To check the application architecture:

  1. Start the application if possible.
  2. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  3. Select the Details tab.
  4. Right-click a column heading.
  5. Choose Select columns.
  6. Enable Platform if Windows provides that column.
  7. Check whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Some older Task Manager versions show a *32 suffix for 32-bit programs. You can also right-click the program’s executable, select Properties, and inspect its location and details, although that does not always clearly state architecture.

Install the language pack or application release that matches the parent program. Do not use the reported historical file size or a filename database as a substitute for a matching installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall relevant drivers only when evidence points there

A display, audio, storage, or chipset driver does not normally own a German proofing DLL. Driver work is therefore not a primary fix for msth3ge.dll. Consider it only if Device Manager shows a separate error, the application crashes with hardware-related events, or Windows began failing after a driver change.

To check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories with warning icons.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Read the message under Device status.
  7. Select the Driver tab.
  8. Use Update Driver or Roll Back Driver only when the device is clearly involved.

For a clean driver reinstall:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the affected device.
  2. Select Uninstall device.
  3. Leave the option to remove driver software selected only when you have a replacement driver ready.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Install the driver from the computer or device manufacturer.

When several devices are involved, manually hunting through hardware pages and comparing driver versions can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers its free scan identifies; installation is handled by the full version, and it does not replace the need to repair the application that calls msth3ge.dll.

What not to do

Do not download an isolated DLL

Random DLL download sites can provide malware, a wrong version, an incorrect architecture, or a file that does not match the application. Even a clean file may fail because the real problem is a missing language package, another dependency, or a damaged installer.

Use the original application installer, Microsoft Office repair, or Microsoft’s official language-pack page instead. No verified current standalone Lingsoft download for this DLL has been established.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64

These folders are not interchangeable. Copying a third-party DLL into both locations can create version conflicts and expose every program to a file that was intended for one application.

Keep the component in the directory selected by its installer.

Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide self-registration for COM or ActiveX components. A language or proofing runtime DLL normally does not need registration.

Running commands such as these is not a general repair:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 msth3ge.dll

It may produce an entry-point error or make no useful change. Use the parent application’s repair process instead.

Do not assume the filename proves safety

Inspect the full path, digital signature, antivirus history, and owning application. A legitimate filename in an unexpected temporary or startup directory can indicate tampering or an unrelated program using the name.

If the error remains

After repairing the likely parent application, collect these details:

  1. The exact application named in the error
  2. The full path of any existing msth3ge.dll
  3. Whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit
  4. Whether German proofing is required
  5. Whether antivirus quarantined the file
  6. Whether the application launches after German proofing is disabled
  7. Any Event Viewer application error recorded at the same time

To check Event Viewer:

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Select Application.
  5. Look for an error at the time of the crash.
  6. Record the failing application and any other missing module named there.

If another dependency is missing, replacing msth3ge.dll will not solve the failure. If the original application is obsolete and no installer or backup remains, removing its unused language feature, restoring Windows from a known-good restore point, or contacting the original software vendor may be safer than installing an unverified DLL.

FAQ

Is msth3ge.dll part of Windows?

There is no evidence that it is a normal Windows System32 component. It is associated with Lingsoft CTAPI3 for German and also appears in historical Microsoft Office German proofing records.

Is msth3ge.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?

Public metadata identifies it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. A 64-bit Windows computer can still use it when the requesting application is 32-bit.

Can I fix the error by installing German proofing tools?

If Word, Outlook, or another Office component is requesting the file, repairing Office and installing the German proofing component is the correct approach. It is not a guarantee for an unrelated legacy application.

Should I register the DLL?

Usually no. regsvr32 is not a general solution for language and proofing runtime files.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the application works after German proofing is disabled?

That strongly suggests the language component is the affected feature. Leave it disabled if German proofing is unnecessary, or reinstall the matching German language component if you need it.

Is the file malware?

The filename alone cannot establish whether a file is safe or malicious. Check its location, signature, antivirus history, and parent application before trusting it.

Can System File Checker restore it?

SFC repairs protected Windows components. It is unlikely to restore a third-party or Office-owned DLL directly, but it can help when the error is part of wider Windows corruption.

What is the safest fix?

Identify the calling application, then repair or reinstall that application’s own language or proofing component. Avoid isolated DLL downloads and system-folder copying.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
