A BIOS/UEFI update is ordinarily intended to update system firmware, not erase personal files stored on your computer’s drive. It is not a guarantee for every device or update method, so check the instructions for your exact model and BIOS version.
The more practical concerns are boot problems and, on encrypted Windows devices, a BitLocker recovery prompt. A recovery prompt asks for a key to unlock the drive; it does not by itself mean your files were erased.
Does a BIOS Update Erase Data?
Usually, a BIOS/UEFI update is separate from operations that reset or reinstall Windows. Microsoft describes UEFI firmware settings as system-level options, such as boot order and Secure Boot, and treats resetting Windows as a distinct recovery operation that can remove personal files. This supports the general rule that a firmware update is not intended to wipe your drive, but it does not guarantee the behavior of every manufacturer’s updater or procedure. What Could Happen After an Update?
A firmware update or related Secure Boot change can affect whether Windows starts normally. On an encrypted Windows device, some Secure Boot updates or changes can also trigger a BitLocker recovery prompt. Microsoft says users encountering the prompt should enter their recovery key; the prompt is an access step, not evidence that the files were erased. How to Prepare Before Updating
- Identify your exact computer or motherboard model and read its official BIOS/UEFI instructions for the update version.
- Back up important files before beginning. Microsoft recommends backing up files before recovery operations; doing so is a prudent precaution here as well. Read Microsoft’s guidance on recovery options.
- If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, make sure you can access the recovery key from somewhere other than the encrypted computer. Microsoft documents recovery prompts related to Secure Boot changes and the need for the key. Find your BitLocker recovery key.
- Follow the manufacturer’s update sequence and power requirements for your exact model. Do not interrupt the update while firmware is being written.
If Windows Asks for a BitLocker Recovery Key
Use the recovery key to unlock the drive. If the prompt repeats or the computer still does not boot normally, consult the computer or motherboard maker’s instructions or support. Do not treat the recovery screen as proof that your drive was wiped, and do not reset or reinstall Windows unless you understand the consequences for your files.

Will updating BIOS delete my files?
It is not expected to. A firmware update is different from resetting or reinstalling Windows, which may remove files depending on the operation and options used.
Can a BIOS update trigger BitLocker recovery?
Yes. Microsoft documents BitLocker recovery prompts associated with some Secure Boot updates or changes. You may need your recovery key to unlock the drive; the prompt itself does not mean the files were erased.
