Tamiz Uddin’s article argues that software engineers should spend less of their time writing functions and more of it designing the context, tool boundaries, invariants and validation that AI agents work within. It pairs that shift with a four-layer gateway pattern for connecting agents to tools through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The word “System One” needs care from the start: in the article it is a broad label for fast, heuristic decisions, while “System One” is also the name of a separate, currently offered decision service. This piece treats the article’s ideas on their own terms and then describes that named service separately.
What the article argues
Uddin describes the traditional development loop as requirement, human design, coding, testing and debugging. In his framing, that loop can move toward one in which an architect sets invariants and context, an AI agent uses tools to do the work, and a human validates the result. This is the author’s proposal, not a measured description of how the industry has changed. The article does not cite a productivity study or benchmark for its claims about developer roles or model behavior, so they are best read as clearly attributed opinion.
The central line of the piece is: “The coder thinks in functions; the architect thinks in flows, constraints, and trust boundaries.”

- Curating a minimal, high-signal toolset. Fewer tools, each with a clear purpose, give an agent less room to choose the wrong action.
- Setting operating boundaries. Decide in advance what the agent may read, write, execute and call.
- Creating feedback loops. Tests, checks and logs tell the human whether the agent’s output still meets the invariants.
- Deciding which actions need human review. Consequential operations are routed to a person rather than executed automatically.
The four-layer MCP gateway
The article’s reference architecture is a gateway for AI context and tools, which it compares to an API gateway. It has four layers. The article is not a normative MCP specification, so the protocol details below describe its proposal rather than the protocol’s formal requirements.
1. Authentication and authorization
The gateway establishes who or what is calling and what that caller may access. Authorization scope is the first control a reader should check in any real implementation, because it determines what an agent can reach even before any tool runs.
2. Context routing
Routing decides which tools, data sources and context an agent receives for a given task. Routing is where the “minimal toolset” idea becomes concrete: an agent that is shown fewer tools has fewer ways to go wrong.

3. Protocol translation
The gateway translates between the client’s connection and the backend tool or service. This layer is where client compatibility problems tend to surface, since different clients support different transports and features.

4. Audit and logging
Every agent action is recorded so that a person can reconstruct what happened, which is the basis for the feedback loops and human review described above.

Each category is a design decision with its own trade-offs in access control, operational burden and cost. A reader adopting this topology should choose each component against their own deployment constraints rather than treating the article’s list as a recommended purchase set.
Security: the three questions and the recommended controls
The article frames agent security around three questions: “What can my AI agent see? What can it do? What happens if it gets tricked?” Its recommended responses are:
- Sandbox generated code so that it runs with limited privileges.
- Limit execution access to the tools and paths the task needs.
- Validate every request before it reaches a tool.
- Log agent actions so they can be reviewed afterward.
- Escalate high-impact operations to a human before they run.
These are the article’s recommendations. They do not show that every MCP gateway includes these controls, and they do not guarantee security for any particular setup. A gateway that implements all four layers can still expose risk if the policies behind it are loose or the tools it wraps are poorly constrained.

Two different meanings of “System One”
The article uses System One in the psychological sense of fast, heuristic decision-making, and argues that an agent architecture benefits from routing small, bounded judgments to narrow, fast decision helpers while complex planning stays with the main agent. That is a conceptual pattern.
System One is also the name of a product. The System One Engine is a separate service with its own client and engine, and its public materials describe it as a way to get focused, evidence-based decisions through MCP. Nothing in the article indicates that its author wrote it for, endorses, or describes the implementation of that product. When you read the article’s pattern, treat it as a design idea that can be implemented by many tools; when you evaluate the named service, use its own documentation.

How it is meant to be used
The MCP page says an agent supplies evidence and a question with defined answers, and the service returns a choice, a score or a boolean probability. Its guidance is to use deterministic rules when they are adequate, to delegate a small decision when that helps, and to leave complex planning and ambiguous judgments to the main agent. It also warns that the extra call can add latency and cost, so the whole workflow should be measured rather than the single call.
The reported study
The product page reports one diagnostic study: two questions were batched on each of twelve inputs. The result was 12 calls instead of 24, with median SDK time of 256 ms instead of 537 ms, and 23 of 24 labels correct against 24 of 24. The page presents these as diagnostic results, not promised production savings. They describe that test only and do not show how a coding agent, a gateway or an engineering team would perform.
Access and pricing
The free preview, as described on the product page, includes up to $1 of Jev usage per UTC calendar month, shared across connections, with no payment card required and no automatic paid overage. The hosted setup page says credentials are scoped to an account and that keys are shown once and expire after 30 days.
Client support
The official setup documentation asks clients to confirm tool discovery and run a representative task before relying on a connection. It also states that native ChatGPT cloud review is pending and that ChatGPT access depends on account, workspace and transport support. Do not assume a particular client is supported or verified without checking the current documentation.

If you are comparing implementations of the pattern, measure them against the same criteria the article implies:
- Authorization scope: what each caller can reach, and whether it can be narrowed per task.
- Client and tool compatibility: test each client you use with the tools you need, not only the protocol in general.
- Validation and audit controls: whether requests are checked and actions are logged in a form you can review.
- Quality on representative tasks: run your own cases, not a vendor’s sample.
- End-to-end latency and total cost: measure the whole workflow, including any extra decision call.
Used this way, the article’s proposal becomes a set of concrete engineering checks, and the architect’s job becomes checking them repeatedly as the agent, tools and policies change.
