Open the folder containing your CSV in VS Code, then select the file in Explorer. A single click opens it in a preview tab; double-click the file or edit it to keep it in a dedicated tab. For a data-oriented view, right-click the file and choose Open in Data Wrangler.
Open a CSV from VS Code Explorer
-
Open the folder that contains the CSV in VS Code. If you are already in a terminal at that folder, run
code .. To open a specific file, pass its path tocode; paths can be absolute or relative to the terminal’s current directory. See Microsoft’s VS Code CLI guide. -
In Explorer, single-click the CSV to inspect it in the editor. This opens a preview tab, which VS Code reuses when you preview another file. Its tab title appears in italics. Microsoft explains this behavior in its user interface documentation.
-
To keep the CSV in its own tab, double-click it in Explorer or edit the file. You can also control preview behavior with the
workbench.editor.enablePreviewandworkbench.editor.enablePreviewFromQuickOpensettings.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Why does my CSV replace the tab I already opened?
The first file was opened in preview mode. Preview tabs are temporary: selecting another file for preview reuses the same tab. An italic tab title indicates preview mode. Double-click the file or edit it to give it a dedicated tab instead.
Open a CSV in a data-oriented view
If you want a workflow designed for working with tabular data rather than simply viewing the CSV as editor text, right-click the local file in Explorer and choose Open in Data Wrangler. Microsoft’s Data Wrangler documentation lists CSV and TSV as directly supported file types. Delimiter or sheet choices may depend on the file type.

Use the VS Code command-line launcher
The CLI can open a folder or file from a terminal. On macOS, if the code command is not available, Microsoft’s CLI guide describes adding it to PATH with Shell Command: Install ‘code’ command. The command-line guide covers the supported usage and path options: Command Line Interface (CLI) — Visual Studio Code.
Choosing an extension for CSV work
Start with the built-in preview for a quick look at raw CSV text. Use Data Wrangler when you want a data-oriented workflow. If you consider another extension, open the Extensions view and inspect its Marketplace entry before installing it.
-
Check the publisher, description, README, changelog, feature contributions, and listed dependencies to see whether the extension’s capabilities match your task.
-
Extensions have the same permissions as VS Code itself, so installing one is a trust decision, not just a change to the editor’s appearance. Microsoft says that, starting with VS Code 1.97, the first installation of an extension from a third-party publisher prompts for publisher trust. See the Extension Marketplace documentation.
