If your Isle of Man ferry is delayed or cancelled, check the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company’s Latest Sailings updates and the text or email sent with your booking, then contact the operator to confirm your options. Ask about the next available crossing, a refund if you no longer need to travel, and any care or accommodation while you wait. Keep records and contact onward providers before buying replacement transport: Steam Packet says it is not responsible for additional onward travel costs.
What to do first
- Check the sailing status. Use the Latest Sailings page and check your booking messages. Steam Packet sends updates by text and/or email and says revised estimated departure times are provided as they become available. A weather forecast alone does not establish that a sailing is cancelled; the operator says it may make decisions close to departure to account for current conditions. It says passengers should be told about a cancellation or departure delay as soon as possible and no later than 30 minutes after the scheduled departure. Steam Packet disruption advice
- Ask what applies to your booking. Contact Steam Packet about the next available sailing and whether rebooking or a refund is available. Its published guidance says staff will help passengers rebook onto the next available crossing, on the same or a different day. Confirm the actual option and timing before purchasing replacement transport.
- Ask about help while waiting. If the wait is extended, ask what refreshments or accommodation the operator will arrange and whether the facilities are available for your sailing.
- Protect your onward plans. Tell hotels, car-hire companies, event organizers and onward transport providers promptly. Steam Packet says it will try to advise about alternatives if disruption causes a missed connection, but it is not responsible for additional onward transport costs. Check your travel-insurance policy for ferry disruption, accommodation and extra transport.
- Keep evidence. Save your booking confirmation, disruption notices, messages, receipts and correspondence. These will help if you request a refund or compensation or make a complaint.

Compare the earliest realistic arrival on a replacement sailing with the value of ending the trip and seeking a refund. Consider whether the new crossing still works with your onward connections, and ask which refund or rerouting rules apply to your route and booking.

If a departure delay makes the trip no longer useful
Steam Packet says that if a cancellation or departure delay exceeds 90 minutes and voids the reason for travel—for example, a day trip—the unused portion of the ticket can be fully refunded within 28 days on application. Where appropriate, it says it will provide a return service to the first point of departure. This is the operator’s published advice; ask it to confirm eligibility and the process for your booking.
Passenger-rights rerouting or reimbursement
For services covered by passenger-rights rules, GOV.UK’s maritime passenger-rights guidance says that when a cancellation occurs, or a departure delay exceeding 90 minutes is expected, passengers can choose between rerouting to their final destination at no extra cost under comparable conditions at the earliest opportunity, or reimbursement of the ticket price plus a free return to the first point of departure. The passenger guide says refunds should be made within seven days using the original payment method. These rights have conditions and exceptions; they should not be assumed to cover every booking, point of sale or circumstance. Ask Steam Packet which rules apply.

What help can you get while waiting?
Refreshments
Steam Packet says it provides snacks, meals or refreshments free when departure is delayed by more than 90 minutes, where facilities are reasonably available. GOV.UK’s passenger guide describes light refreshments at 90 minutes, a snack or light meal at four hours and a hot meal at eight hours, with the sequence restarting for each further four-hour period. It also says refreshments need not be provided when facilities are unavailable. Confirm what is available at your port and during your particular delay.
Accommodation
Steam Packet says that when disruption not caused by weather or extraordinary circumstances requires an additional night, it will offer adequate accommodation free. Its published limit is €80 per passenger per night, excluding transport, for up to three nights (or sterling equivalent). GOV.UK’s statutory guidance instead describes adequate accommodation and transport to and from it, with a maximum of £70 per person per night for up to three nights; it says accommodation assistance does not apply when weather endangers safe ship operation. The passenger guide also states a £70 nightly maximum and describes weather and safe-operation exceptions. These published amounts and descriptions differ. Ask Steam Packet what it will arrange and check the applicable guidance before paying for a hotel yourself.

Can you claim compensation for arriving late?
Arrival-delay compensation is separate from a refund for a cancelled or unusable trip. Steam Packet says compensation must be requested and may be available for delays to arrival, subject to journey length, cause and eligibility rules.

Steam Packet’s published thresholds cover journeys up to eight hours; the longer-journey thresholds in the table come from GOV.UK’s maritime passenger-rights guidance. The 50% rate applies when the arrival delay exceeds twice the relevant threshold. The percentage is based on the affected leg’s ticket price, according to Steam Packet. Check the scheduled duration and current rules for your service before applying.

Steam Packet says its listed compensation provisions do not apply when the delay is caused by weather or extraordinary circumstances. It also excludes standby passengers and open tickets without a reserved departure time from the listed assistance and compensation. GOV.UK lists further exclusions, including unsafe weather, extraordinary circumstances, open tickets other than season tickets, advance notice before ticket purchase and passenger fault. Ask the operator or consult the official guidance to check whether an exception affects your case.

GOV.UK says this should be done within two months of the date the service was, or should have been, performed. Steam Packet accepts service feedback by email at [email protected] and through onboard feedback forms. Include your booking details, sailing date, the outcome you are seeking and copies of relevant notices or receipts.
