Quick wins for a faster PC:

Use VS Code when the CSV belongs to a software project, you need text-oriented edits, or you want the file beside scripts and version control. The key caution: Excel can interpret values when opening a CSV, while a spreadsheet-style grid in VS Code depends on the extensions you choose.
How the two tools treat a CSV
A CSV stores data as plain text, with rows separated by line breaks and fields separated by a delimiter such as a comma. Excel presents that content as a worksheet; VS Code’s built-in editor presents it as text. That difference shapes how each tool handles inspection, editing, and saving.
Excel: work with visible rows and columns
Excel is convenient when you want to scan a table, sort or filter it, use formulas, or make a small number of direct edits. Its import tools also let you choose how the file is parsed before it reaches a worksheet.
VS Code: edit the text directly
VS Code is a code editor, with general-purpose tools such as search and replace. That makes it a natural fit for text changes and for CSVs that live alongside code. A grid or specialized data-cleaning workflow is not guaranteed by the built-in editor: it depends on an extension. Microsoft’s VS Code documentation describes the product as “At its heart, Visual Studio Code is a code editor.”

Choose based on the job
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Quickly inspect and edit a small table | Excel | The worksheet view makes rows and columns immediately visible; check the import result before saving. |
| Preserve IDs with leading zeroes or date-like text | Excel import tools, with sensitive columns set to text | Direct opening can interpret values according to current data-format settings. Import gives you more control over column types. |
| Repeat the same import and cleanup steps | Excel Power Query | It supports transformations before loading data to a worksheet; review inferred types rather than assuming they are correct. |
| Edit text in a code project or keep data with scripts | VS Code | Text editing, search and replace, and a shared project workspace suit code-adjacent changes. |
| Use a spreadsheet-like grid inside VS Code | VS Code with a suitable extension | Tabular views and specialized preparation depend on the extension. Microsoft’s VS Code Data Science profile lists Data Wrangler as an option. |
How to import CSV data into Excel without changing sensitive values
Opening a CSV directly can cause Excel to interpret fields using its current default data-format settings. This matters for identifiers such as 001234, which may lose leading zeroes, and strings that resemble dates. If exact text matters, use an import route and set the relevant columns to text instead of relying on defaults.
Use From Text/CSV
- In Excel, go to Data > From Text/CSV and select the file.
- Review the detected delimiter and preview. Change the delimiter if the preview does not split fields as intended.
- Choose the option to transform the data if you need to adjust column types before loading.
- Set identifier or date-like columns that must remain unchanged to text, then load and verify critical values in the worksheet.
Use the Text Import Wizard when available
The Text Import Wizard also offers delimiter choices and column-format controls. Its availability and exact steps can vary by Excel version and configuration. Microsoft’s import/export guidance covers Excel for Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016.

Use Power Query for repeatable preparation
Power Query lets you transform imported data before loading the result into a worksheet. It can infer data types, but Microsoft warns that inference can be incorrect. Review the types in the query and explicitly set parsing and types for columns where values must remain exact. This is more suitable than repeating manual edits when you need a consistent import-and-cleanup process.
Microsoft also documents an IMPORTCSV function, but its availability is narrower than standard CSV import: the cited documentation says it is generally available to Microsoft 365 subscribers in the Windows Insiders Beta channel, Version 2502 (Build 18604.20002) or later. It expects comma delimiters and UTF-8. Check that your channel and build qualify before relying on it.

Use VS Code for text-oriented and project-based edits
For edits such as searching for a value, replacing text, or keeping a data file with scripts and project files, VS Code’s text editor can be more direct than a worksheet. If you need to inspect or prepare data in a table view, select an extension for that purpose rather than assuming VS Code includes one by default. Data Wrangler is listed in Microsoft’s VS Code Data Science profile; check the extension’s current Marketplace listing, publisher, and documentation before installing it. Extensions add capabilities, but also require you to decide which publisher and software to trust.
Check what will survive when you save
A CSV is a text format, not a complete copy of an Excel workbook. Microsoft says that saving as CSV keeps only the current worksheet and can discard features. Its documented text import/export capacity is up to 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns; this is Excel’s stated limit, not a comparative threshold for VS Code. If you edit in Excel, confirm the intended sheet and inspect the saved CSV, especially when exact text or delimiters matter.
