How Does Mars’s Atmosphere Differ From Earth’s?

Mars’s atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide and has less than one percent of Earth’s average surface pressure, shaping its temperatures, storms and water conditions.

Mars’s atmosphere is far thinner than Earth’s and has a very different mix of gases: it is about 95.1% carbon dioxide, while Earth’s is about 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. Mars’s low air pressure limits heat retention and makes long-lasting surface liquid water difficult, but its atmosphere still produces winds and powerful dust storms.

What are the atmospheres made of?

The biggest difference is their chemical makeup. NASA’s Mars Fact Sheet lists Mars’s atmosphere by volume as approximately 95.1% carbon dioxide, 2.59% nitrogen, 1.94% argon and 0.16% oxygen. Earth’s atmosphere is approximately 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen, according to NASA’s Facts About Earth.

Mars does contain oxygen, but only in trace amounts. Its 0.16% figure is not comparable to the abundant oxygen in Earth’s air. Mars’s atmosphere also contains smaller quantities of other gases; the percentages above are reference values, not a claim that composition is identical everywhere or at every altitude. See NASA’s Mars Fact Sheet for the listed figures.

How much thinner is Mars’s atmosphere?

NASA gives Mars a surface pressure of 6.36 millibars at mean radius, with a seasonal range of 4.0 to 8.7 millibars. These are reference values: pressure changes with season and location, including surface elevation. NASA has also characterized Mars’s pressure as less than one percent of Earth’s average in its 2018 terraforming explainer.

That extremely low pressure means Mars has very little air pressing on its surface compared with Earth. It is a different environment, not simply a thinner version of familiar Earth weather.

What does the thin air mean for heat and temperature?

Mars’s sparse atmosphere does not retain heat as effectively as Earth’s. NASA notes that solar heat escapes readily from Mars, so surface temperatures can vary sharply with location and time. A single average would conceal those local and daily differences.

The presence of carbon dioxide does not make Mars warm enough for stable surface liquid water today. In a release about proposed terraforming, NASA quoted study lead author Bruce Jakosky saying that carbon dioxide and water vapor are the only greenhouse gases likely to be abundant enough on Mars to provide significant greenhouse warming. That statement concerns the study’s terraforming context, not a claim that present-day Mars is warm or pressurized enough for liquid water to persist.

Can Mars have weather with such little air?

Yes. Mars has winds, dust devils and dust storms. Its atmospheric conditions vary over time and from place to place, as NASA explains in its Mars atmosphere overview. Some dust storms can spread over much of the planet, and NASA notes that dust may take months to settle after such events on its Mars overview.

So a thin atmosphere is not a weather-free atmosphere. Rather, Mars’s weather unfolds in air with very low pressure and a composition unlike Earth’s.

How does Mars’s atmosphere affect water, and was it always this way?

Under present surface conditions, Mars’s atmosphere is too thin for liquid water to persist for long: exposed water quickly evaporates or freezes, according to NASA’s Mars overview. That does not mean Mars was always as dry and thin-aired as it is now. NASA reports evidence that billions of years ago Mars was warmer and wetter and had a thicker atmosphere, as described in its 2018 explainer.

The contrast is therefore both chemical and physical: today’s Mars has carbon-dioxide-dominated, low-pressure air, while Earth’s nitrogen- and oxygen-rich atmosphere is much denser and retains heat more effectively.
