How to Use PlayStation Portal for Remote Play Away From Home

Yes—PlayStation Portal can connect to your PS5 over broadband Wi-Fi when you’re away from home. It streams compatible games installed on that PS5; it is not a standalone console, and it does not connect to a PS4. Before you leave, enable Remote Play, set the PS5 up to stay reachable in Rest Mode if needed, and test a Portal connection at home.

What you need for Remote Play away from home

  • A PS5 connected to the internet, with Remote Play enabled.
  • The same PlayStation account signed in on the PS5 and Portal.
  • Broadband Wi-Fi for Portal at your destination. Sony’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, lists at least 5 Mbps for use and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience; Sony does not state a publication year for those figures. See PlayStation’s Remote Play overview.

Your home Wi-Fi is not required at the destination, but your PS5 must remain online and available. This guide covers Remote Play, where your own PS5 runs the game and streams it to Portal. Cloud Streaming is a separate feature that streams eligible games from PlayStation’s servers and has separate eligibility and subscription conditions; those terms can vary by region. PlayStation’s Portal product page describes the distinction.

Prepare the PS5 before you leave

  1. Connect the PS5 to the internet and sign in to the PlayStation account you will use on Portal. Update the PS5 system software.
  2. On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
  3. If you want Portal to wake the PS5 while it is in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.

These settings and preparation steps are in PlayStation’s Remote Play instructions. If the PS5 is fully powered off rather than in Rest Mode, the network wake setting will not make it available.

Set up Portal and test it at home

  1. Complete Portal’s initial setup while connected to your home Wi-Fi.
  2. Make sure Portal is signed in to the same PlayStation account as the PS5.
  3. While near the PS5, open Remote Play on Portal and confirm it connects and starts a session.

Testing before travel helps you catch account or console-setting problems while you can still access the PS5. Sony also notes that Portal may not search for or connect to the PS5 if it has been a while since the last sign-in. Portal system software and support information includes related guidance.

Connect from your destination

  1. Connect Portal to the destination’s broadband Wi-Fi.
  2. From Portal’s Remote Play home screen, start Remote Play and select your PS5 if prompted.

The destination network does not need to be your home network. Public Wi-Fi can work, but some networks require an extra validation step, such as signing in through a captive portal on a phone or tablet. Sony says this may be possible after Portal’s initial setup on home Wi-Fi, but it does not guarantee compatibility with every public network. If the venue’s Wi-Fi cannot complete its sign-in process or blocks the connection, Portal may not connect. PlayStation’s Portal FAQ explains away-from-home Wi-Fi use.

At least 15 Mbps Speed Sony recommends for a better play experience. Sony Interactive Entertainment; publication year not stated, current guidance accessed 2026. Remote Play overview.

Meeting a speed figure does not guarantee a stable session: Sony says quality varies with the network environment. Public Wi-Fi may have congestion, inconsistent performance, or connection restrictions, so a venue’s advertised speed alone cannot predict how Remote Play will feel. Sony does not promise a specific resolution, frame rate, or result on hotel Wi-Fi.

Do you need PlayStation Plus or a special headset?

PlayStation Plus is not required for Portal Remote Play itself. A particular game may still require a membership for its online multiplayer features. For audio, Portal supports wired headsets or earbuds with a 3.5 mm jack and PlayStation Link devices, including PULSE Explore earbuds and the PULSE Elite headset; a special wireless headset is optional. PlayStation’s Portal compatibility information and Portal FAQ cover compatibility and membership.
