No—not because it is 2TB. Capacity gives you room to keep more games installed; it does not add CPU or GPU power or guarantee higher frame rates. A replacement SSD may change load times compared with eMMC or a microSD card, but tests do not establish a general performance boost from swapping one modern NVMe drive for another.
What a 2TB SSD changes—and what it does not
The main benefit of a 2TB internal SSD is storage space. It can hold more games on the Deck at once, reducing how often you need to uninstall titles or move them between storage devices. Valve’s technical specifications list the Deck’s hardware and storage options, including 512GB and 1TB NVMe configurations and a microSD slot: Steam Deck technical specifications.
Capacity is not a speed rating. A 2TB drive does not inherently load games faster than a smaller SSD, and the capacity figure alone says nothing about frame rate. Valve reports that, in its testing, it “did not see any impact to gaming performance between x2 and x4” PCIe Gen 3 SSD configurations. That finding is specific to those interface variants, but it cautions against treating advertised interface throughput as a reliable predictor of in-game gains. Valve’s certified refurbished specifications.
What changes when you compare storage types
Storage can affect loading, and results depend on the game and the starting device. A move from eMMC or microSD to an SSD is a different comparison from replacing one modern NVMe SSD with another.

eMMC or microSD versus SSD
Steam Deck HQ tested Horizon Zero Dawn, Cyberpunk 2077, and Returnal across several storage configurations. In its 2023 tests, a 1TB SSD loaded Cyberpunk 2077’s benchmark 44% faster than the tested 64GB eMMC drive; in Returnal, the tested 1TB SSD loaded the benchmark 22% faster than 64GB eMMC. Those are results for the specific drives, games, and procedure in that comparison—not estimates of the gain from installing any 2TB SSD. Steam Deck HQ’s storage benchmarks.
Tom’s Hardware also reported a large eMMC-to-SSD contrast in its Hollow Knight test: launching the game took 11.1–12.1 seconds across the fastest and slowest SSDs it tested, while eMMC took more than 50% longer than even the slowest tested M.2 2230 SSD. This does not show that a 2TB SSD is faster than a smaller modern SSD; it compares storage tiers. Tom’s Hardware’s Steam Deck SSD upgrade comparison.
One modern NVMe SSD versus another
Evidence for a consistent gaming advantage between modern SSDs is much weaker. Tom’s Hardware concluded that its tested drives did not show a performance difference significant enough to select one modern 2230 SSD over another on speed alone. Steam Deck HQ likewise found average frame-rate results generally within margin of error across its tested SSD configurations. Its 2023 comparison reported a 10% average loading-time increase across its 512GB-to-1TB comparison, but that is a particular test result—not a forecast for a 2TB upgrade.
In Returnal, Steam Deck HQ reported differences in low-percentile results and suggested storage streaming as a possible explanation, while average results remained within margin of error. That observation applies to the named game and test setup; it is not evidence of a universal frame-rate or frame-pacing improvement.

Choose based on the problem you want to solve
| Your priority | Practical option | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep more games installed internally | Replace the internal drive with a compatible 2TB M.2 2230 NVMe SSD. | It adds capacity, not a guaranteed FPS or loading-time gain. Installation requires opening the Deck and migrating data or setting it up again. |
| Add space without replacing the internal SSD | Use a compatible microSD card in the Deck’s card slot. | It is an expansion route, but loading results vary by game and card; the cited tests do not establish a universal comparison with every SSD. |
| Improve loading from eMMC | An internal SSD upgrade may make a more noticeable difference than moving between modern NVMe SSDs. | The size of any benefit depends on the game and the tested storage devices; published results are not a guarantee for every setup. |
| Increase average FPS | Do not choose a 2TB drive expecting it to raise frame rates. | Capacity and storage interface do not establish a general FPS gain on the Deck. |
The Deck uses an M.2 2230 format for its internal SSD, according to Valve’s certified refurbished specifications. Check the physical format and compatibility for your particular Deck revision before buying a replacement. Valve’s specifications also list UHS-I support for SD, SDXC, and SDHC cards. Valve’s technical specifications.
What an internal SSD replacement involves
An internal upgrade is not as simple as inserting a card. You need to move or reinstall the system and games, and the job involves opening the device. Tom’s Hardware describes two routes: clone the existing drive, or install SteamOS on the replacement drive and redownload games. A USB-C NVMe enclosure can be useful for the optional cloning route. Valve points owners to iFixit for replacement parts and repair guides; consult the instructions for your exact Deck revision before starting. iFixit’s Steam Deck repair guides.
- Confirm compatibility. Verify that the replacement is an M.2 2230 NVMe drive and check guidance for your Deck revision.
- Choose a migration route. Clone the existing drive if you have the necessary equipment and understand the process, or install SteamOS and redownload your games.
- Follow a revision-specific repair guide. Use Valve’s linked repair resources and take care during disassembly; consult the guide’s safety and battery instructions.
- Set up and verify the Deck. After migration or reinstallation, confirm that SteamOS starts and your installed games are available before relying on the new storage.
When microSD is the simpler answer
If the issue is simply having more games available, a microSD card avoids replacing the internal drive. Valve says Steam Deck formats microSD cards to its expected filesystem, ext4 with casefolding, and provides a microSD slot for expansion. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ. Choose internal storage when you specifically want the extra capacity inside the Deck and are prepared for the replacement and setup work; choose microSD when ease of expansion matters more than installing a new internal drive.
