Steam Playtest is a free way for developers to let players try a game before release. Players request access from the game’s regular Steam store page; the developer can admit them in batches or enable automatic access. A Playtest runs under a separate app ID, so participation is kept apart from the main game’s reviews and wishlists.
How players join a Steam Playtest
- Open the game’s main Steam store page. The Playtest signup appears on that page; it does not have a separate Playtest store page.
- Select the option to request access. If signup is limited, this records interest but does not grant immediate access.
- Wait for the developer to admit players. In limited mode, Steam says it selects players at random from the accounts that requested access. Developers can choose countries when they need to manage regional availability or server latency.
- Check the game’s store page for your access status or watch for an email from Steam if you are admitted.
With open signup, everyone who requests access is automatically added. Steam says that when a developer switches from limited to open signup, pending requests generally begin being accepted within a few minutes. Steamworks: Steam Playtest
How developers set up and manage a test
A Steam Playtest is a separate child app ID associated with the main game. Developers configure its build and whether it is playable in Steamworks. The Playtest has technical Steamworks features, but fewer store and community setup requirements than a regular game app.
Choose how players get access
- Limited signup: Collect requests and admit groups when capacity or test timing allows. Steam handles selection randomly from the requesters.
- Open signup: Automatically add people who request access from the main game’s store page.
- Playtest keys: Request keys for direct distribution. Steam says keys can be generated before the store page is live, and a Playtest does not need public signup.
Coordinate and end the test
Developers can set a Playtest to “Not Playable” when a test ends. For scheduled multiplayer sessions, or to explain a change in availability, Steam recommends communicating through Steam Events and Announcements. Ending access without telling participants can leave them confused or frustrated.

A developer can make an ended Playtest visible again; people who already received access retain it and do not need to request or receive access again. Resetting a Playtest is different: it is irreversible, removes participants, and disables its product keys. It is a deliberate reset of the test, not simply a temporary pause. What Playtest participation changes—and what it does not
Because the Playtest uses its own app ID, Steam keeps its activity separate from the main game. A person who has only played the Playtest cannot review the actual game. Playtest time does not count toward the refund policy for a purchased copy, and it does not affect trading cards or achievements. Steamworks: Steam Playtest Steamworks: Testing On Steam

Playtest access is free, and keys cannot be sold
Steam describes Playtest as free for both customers and developers. Developers must not charge players for access, sell Playtest keys, or include those keys in paid bundles or subscriptions. If a developer wants to charge for an unfinished game, Steam points to Steam Early Access rather than Playtest. Steamworks: Steam Playtest
Are Steam Playtests confidential?
No—not by default. Public Playtest participants are not under an NDA, and developers should not expect them to keep the test secret. For a confidential beta, Steam says developers need to arrange their own registration and use a hidden, key-controlled setup. Its documented options include a hidden Playtest app with keys or the main game app with release override keys. Steamworks: Steam Playtest

Steam Playtest or release override keys?
Steam documents both a dedicated Playtest app and testing through the main game app ID with release override keys. The better fit depends on how broad the test is and whether separating it from the main game matters.
| Decision | Steam Playtest | Main game app with release override keys |
|---|---|---|
| App identity | Separate app ID associated with the game | Main game app ID |
| Typical access | Store-page signup with limited or open access, or Playtest keys | Release override keys |
| Reviews and wishlists | Playtest activity is separate from the main game | Testing takes place on the main app ID |
| Confidentiality | Public signup is not confidential; a hidden, key-based setup is possible | Requires a developer-managed process and keys |
Steam describes release override keys as a route for small beta tests and press or influencer access; its key guidance generally limits these to 2,500. For larger public tests, Steam recommends Playtest. Developers should check the current Steamworks testing guidance before relying on a key limit or requesting keys, since platform instructions and thresholds can change.
