Scientists study most distant planets by measuring how they affect light from their stars. A planet may dim its star as it passes in front, make the star wobble through gravity, briefly magnify a background star, or appear as a faint point of light beside its much brighter host. Astronomers analyze these signals to infer a planet’s orbit, size, mass, and—when conditions allow—atmospheric composition. These are remote measurements, not visits or detailed views of a planet’s surface.
How do we discover worlds around other stars?
Planets beyond our solar system are called exoplanets. Because they are distant and often overwhelmed by the glare of their stars, astronomers usually detect them indirectly: they observe a star or a patch of sky and look for a repeatable change that a planet can explain. Each technique measures a different signal, so scientists combine methods when they can.
NASA estimates, based on Kepler data, that the Milky Way contains more planets than stars—more than a trillion planets. That is a statistical estimate, not a direct census of every world. NASA’s overview of how exoplanets are found and characterized also quotes exoplanet researcher Sara Seager: “Right now we know, for the first time, that small planets are very common.”
What does a planet do to its star’s light?
Transit photometry: watch for a recurring dip
A transit occurs when a planet crosses in front of its star from our point of view. The planet blocks a small fraction of the star’s light, producing a dip in brightness that a telescope can measure. If the dip repeats, the pattern helps establish the planet’s orbital period. With the period and the star’s mass, astronomers can calculate the orbit’s size, as NASA explains in its exoplanet facts overview.

Transit detection depends on viewing geometry: the planet must cross the star along our line of sight. A planet that does not pass in front of its star cannot be detected by the transit method alone. The technique is especially useful because the light dip can also enable atmospheric study.
Radial velocity: measure the star’s wobble
A planet’s gravity pulls on its star, causing the star to move slightly as both orbit their shared center of mass. Astronomers measure the star’s radial velocity—the component of its motion toward or away from us—by tracking shifts in the wavelengths of its light. The wavelengths are compressed as the star approaches and stretched as it recedes. A repeating shift can reveal the planet’s gravitational influence even when the planet itself is not visible. Radial-velocity observations can complement transit discoveries with information about a planet’s mass.

This is evidence from the star’s motion, not a photograph or a direct observation of the planet’s surface. NASA’s explanation of transit and radial-velocity discoveries describes both methods.
Gravitational microlensing: catch a temporary brightening
When a foreground star passes in front of a more distant background star, the foreground star’s gravity can bend and magnify the background star’s light. A planet orbiting the foreground star can add a smaller signal to that brightening event. Microlensing can therefore reveal a planet without showing the planet itself, using a different arrangement from either a transit or a stellar wobble. NASA describes microlensing as a method used by ground-based telescopes in its exoplanet detection overview.

How can scientists learn what an exoplanet’s atmosphere contains?
A spectrograph spreads light into its component wavelengths. Atoms and molecules interact with particular wavelengths in characteristic ways, leaving features in the spectrum. By comparing the observed pattern with known signatures, scientists infer which substances may be present. A spectrum is a set of clues carried by light—not a sample taken from the planet.
During a transit, a small portion of the star’s light passes through the planet’s atmosphere before reaching a telescope. Some wavelengths are affected more than others, so comparing the light can reveal clues about atmospheric constituents. This technique is called transmission spectroscopy. NASA explains that the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) uses spectrographs to study exoplanets and can use transmission spectroscopy to measure atmospheric contents in its guide to how Webb studies exoplanets.

A detected atmospheric signature does not by itself establish that a planet is habitable or hosts life. It is evidence to interpret in the context of the observation and the planet’s broader environment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can telescopes see an exoplanet directly?
Sometimes. Direct imaging tries to capture light from the planet itself, but the host star is usually much brighter. A coronagraph can block some of the star’s light, and image processing can subtract the star’s known appearance to help distinguish a nearby planet. NASA notes that direct images so far have mainly involved giant planets that are still hot from their formation.

Direct imaging is not a close-up: individual pixels do not show surface features. The planet’s light can, however, support further study, including analysis of its atmosphere. NASA describes the method and its limits in its overview of exoplanet detection and characterization.
How do the planet-finding methods differ?
| Method | Signal measured | What it can help establish | Main challenge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transit photometry | A recurring dip in the star’s brightness | Orbital period; with stellar mass, orbital size; transit light can enable atmospheric studies | The orbit must carry the planet across the star from our viewpoint |
| Radial velocity | Wavelength shifts as the star moves toward and away from us | A planet’s gravitational influence; can contribute mass information | The signal is a small shift in the star’s light, not a view of the planet |
| Gravitational microlensing | Temporary magnification of a background star, sometimes with an additional planetary signal | Evidence for a planet around the foreground star | The useful alignment produces a brief event |
| Direct imaging | Light separated from the host star | Planet light for further characterization, including atmospheric study | The star’s glare must be blocked or subtracted; images do not show surface detail |
These methods are complementary rather than interchangeable. A transit measures a brightness change and requires a particular alignment; radial velocity tracks stellar motion; microlensing detects a temporary change in background light; direct imaging tries to separate the planet’s own light. What astronomers can conclude depends on which signal is available and what additional observations can be made.
What does JWST add to exoplanet study?
JWST uses spectrographs and imaging modes to investigate exoplanets. Its observations can analyze light filtered through an atmosphere during a transit or, in suitable cases, light from the planet itself. By observing a planet at different times, astronomers can also build a map of atmospheric temperature as a function of longitude. NASA outlines these approaches in its Webb exoplanet explainer. Results should be understood as findings from particular observations, not as automatic proof of habitability or life.
