For a Bitcoin ASIC, CGMiner is the best fit if you want direct control over mining and pool settings; Awesome Miner is the better choice for managing and monitoring a fleet. Neither can mine Bitcoin on its own: you need SHA-256 ASIC hardware, plus a compatible pool and configuration.
What Bitcoin mining software does
Mining software coordinates work between a mining pool and the specialized hardware. The Bitcoin Developer Guide explains that software sends an 80-byte block header and a target threshold to an ASIC. The ASIC performs the hashing; software helps configure, submit and monitor its work. Bitcoin Developer Guide: Mining
That distinction matters when choosing a program: a desktop app or command-line miner is not a substitute for a Bitcoin ASIC. For Bitcoin, the relevant hardware is a SHA-256 ASIC, and compatibility depends on the miner model, firmware and pool setup.
Which Bitcoin mining software should you choose?
| Software | Best for | What it offers | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| CGMiner | Technically confident users operating compatible ASICs | Command-line mining engine with pool configuration, device settings and API controls; project documentation lists Antminer support. | Check the specific ASIC and firmware for compatibility before deployment. |
| Awesome Miner | Operators who want a graphical management layer for one or more miners | Monitoring and management, network discovery, remote agents and server deployment options. | It manages miners; the ASIC still performs the hashing. |
| BFGMiner | Users considering a command-line alternative for ASIC or FPGA hardware | Named by the Bitcoin Developer Guide as widely used mining software. | Current release cadence and hardware compatibility matrix are not established by the cited guide. |
| MultiMiner or EasyMiner | Beginners comparing familiar miner interfaces | Recognizable names in comparison coverage. | Current technical documentation is less established here than for CGMiner and Awesome Miner; verify support for your exact setup. |
CGMiner: direct ASIC and pool control
CGMiner is an open-source, GPLv3 mining program whose project documentation describes it as a multi-threaded, multi-pool FPGA and ASIC miner for Bitcoin. It is the more direct option when you are comfortable working with configuration and command-line controls rather than relying on a fleet-management dashboard. CGMiner project documentation

Its documentation covers external-miner setup, network scanning, remote agents and monitoring for standard-compliant ASIC miners. This makes it a stronger fit than a standalone mining engine when you need visibility across multiple devices or locations. Awesome Miner documentation
For Bitcoin, the Awesome Miner setup wizard says to select SHA-256 and notes that most ASICs, including Antminer, use CGMiner-compatible mining software. Treat that as a compatibility starting point—not a guarantee for every model or firmware. Awesome Miner Bitcoin mining setup

How to choose software for your ASIC
- Confirm the hardware and algorithm. For Bitcoin mining, start with a SHA-256 ASIC and verify that the software supports the exact model and firmware.
- Choose your control style. Pick CGMiner for direct command-line configuration; consider Awesome Miner when a graphical view and centralized management matter more.
- Check pool and API requirements. Confirm the pool endpoint, Stratum settings and credentials, plus whether you need a mining API for monitoring or control.
- Match the operating system and network layout. Check supported OS versions, remote-agent needs, network discovery and whether miners sit behind a proxy or across sites.
- Check maintenance before rollout. Review the project’s current release and device documentation; do not infer current compatibility from an old guide or a familiar product name.
Do not choose mining software by promised returns
No reliable software-specific profitability figure is established by the cited official documentation. Mining results depend on the ASIC’s efficiency, electricity cost, pool fees, uptime and changing network conditions. Software choice can affect configuration and operations, but it does not remove those cost and performance variables.
