Compare complete laptop configurations and their results in matched tests—not GPU names or advertised wattage alone. A higher GPU power limit can help, but it does not translate into a fixed increase in frame rate: cooling, firmware, performance mode, CPU and memory, and the workload all matter.
Why the same laptop GPU name can perform differently
A laptop GPU model name does not identify one uniform power configuration. Manufacturers can configure laptops with different graphics power limits, and a stated maximum may include a Dynamic Boost allowance. NVIDIA advises buyers to check the laptop maker’s specifications, its GPU specifications, or NVIDIA Control Panel’s System Information for graphics power details. Its February 2023 guidance also notes that CPU and memory choice, thermal design, performance modes, and OEM software affect laptop performance; that is vendor guidance, not an independent test result. NVIDIA’s laptop power and performance guide.
Power terminology also needs care. NVIDIA’s GeForce GPU Power Primer describes TDP as a general term, TGP as power supplied to the graphics subsystem, and TBP as essentially the same as TGP. It distinguishes graphics-board power from chip-only power. These definitions describe NVIDIA’s terminology; they are not a universal cross-vendor laptop measurement standard.
Build a fair comparison before looking at scores
For each laptop, record the exact model and generation, GPU, advertised power limit, whether Dynamic Boost is included, CPU, memory, performance mode, and whether testing was performed while plugged in. If any of those details are missing, mark the comparison as incomplete rather than treating the GPU label as a complete specification.

- Check the manufacturer’s page for the exact laptop configuration, not just the GPU family.
- Record the test’s resolution, graphics settings, game or benchmark version, upscaling, frame generation, and laptop performance mode.
- Use results from the same workload and settings wherever possible. Compare several games or tasks that reflect your intended use.
- Keep synthetic benchmark scores in context: they can offer a controlled comparison, but do not predict every game equally.
UL says it evaluates 3DMark-to-game correlations separately by game, resolution, and quality settings, focusing on GPU-bound games. Its guidance on estimating game performance from 3DMark scores is a reminder to treat a benchmark score as an indicator for relevant workloads, not a universal FPS conversion.
Use tests that match the workload
For gaming comparisons, distinguish rasterized graphics from ray tracing and match the test settings. UL’s 3DMark Reviewers’ Guide recommends Steel Nomad for heavy rasterized gaming and Speed Way for heavy ray-traced gaming, with Solar Bay Extreme and Steel Nomad Light as lighter workloads. Confirm that the benchmark is supported on both systems and compare results generated under equivalent conditions.

For an actual game, compare average frame rates only when the game build, resolution, quality preset, upscaling, and frame-generation options match. If those conditions differ, the number may still be useful for choosing between the tested laptops as configured, but it cannot isolate the effect of GPU power.
Check sustained performance, not just a short peak
A brief benchmark run can miss heat-related changes. Look for repeated runs, review methodology, cooling or fan mode, and stress-test results. UL recommends 20-minute stress tests for mobile devices and thin-and-light laptops to show how heat buildup and cooling affect performance over time. A laptop that leads in a short run may not retain the same advantage after warming up. Do not infer cooling quality from chassis size or a peak-wattage claim alone.

What wattage can—and cannot—tell you
Wattage is useful context, not a direct FPS multiplier. In a Notebookcheck analysis updated March 2, 2023, RTX 4050, RTX 4060, and RTX 4070 Laptop GPU configurations were discussed in a 35–115 W configurable TGP range, with up to 25 W of Dynamic Boost. Those figures apply to the configurations covered in that dated analysis, not all laptop GPUs or later generations. In selected RTX 4070 Laptop GPU tests, the 100 W and 115 W results were both 124 FPS in The Witcher 3 Ultra at 1080p and 91 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 1.5 Ultra at 1080p. The results illustrate diminishing returns in those specific tests; they do not establish a universal wattage ceiling. Notebookcheck’s 2023 power-level analysis.
That review also cautioned that observed gaming power could be below the advertised maximum. A configured limit is therefore not proof that a game continuously draws that amount, nor that a laptop will convert each additional watt into proportionally more frames.

Keep performance-per-watt comparisons honest
If efficiency matters, define both sides of the calculation. Frames per second divided by measured GPU board watts is different from frames per second divided by whole-laptop wall power. Do not combine chip-only power from one source with board or system power from another.
NVIDIA’s FrameView User Guide distinguishes chip-only power from total graphics power and notes that its documented AMD readings do not directly support AMD-versus-NVIDIA power comparisons. Use a consistent measurement method and scope before drawing an efficiency conclusion.
How to state the result
Describe the winner only for the tested systems, workloads, and settings. Say whether the advantage appeared across several relevant tests or just one, and identify the power and sustained-performance context. If noise, heat, price, weight, or battery behavior matters to the buying decision, use evidence from reviews of those exact laptops; GPU wattage results alone do not establish those trade-offs.
