Does an eGPU Work With Every Steam Machine? Compatibility and Performance Explained

Steam Machines are not one uniform platform. The current Valve model lacks documented conventional USB4 or Thunderbolt eGPU support, though one demanding M.2-to-OCuLink workaround has been reported.

No—an eGPU is not established as compatible with every Steam Machine. The name covers different hardware: the current Valve model and older, vendor-built PCs. Valve’s documentation does not establish conventional USB4 or Thunderbolt eGPU support for its current machine. One report describes a demanding workaround using the internal M.2 slot, but that is not an official or plug-and-play upgrade.

Why “Steam Machine” doesn’t mean one eGPU-compatible system

Valve’s historical Steam Machine brochure shows products from multiple manufacturers, not one universal chassis or motherboard. Ports, graphics hardware, and expansion options depend on the specific model. A connector that looks familiar across two machines does not prove that they support the same kind of eGPU connection.

For example, ZOTAC’s NEN specifications list a GeForce GTX 960 and a USB 3.0 Type-C port, but do not list Thunderbolt. Dell’s Alienware Steam Machine R2 documentation lists USB 3.0 ports and model-specific GeForce GTX 960 or Radeon R9 M470X graphics. Neither a Type-C port nor the Steam Machine name by itself establishes eGPU support. Check the exact model’s documentation before buying an enclosure or adapter.

What the current Valve Steam Machine documents—and doesn’t

Valve describes the current Steam Machine as a SteamOS gaming computer with a semi-custom discrete AMD CPU and GPU. Its Steamworks guidance addresses game compatibility and optimization; it is not a certification of eGPU accessories.

  • 【Power Supply】This DEG1 supports ATX and SFX standard power supplies, which provides flexible power supply solutions for mini chassis.
  • 【Oculink Interfaces】Please kindly note the OCulink interface does not support hot plugging, and the machine needs to be turned off first.
  • 【Follow-start Function】The follow-start function is only compatible with MINISFORUM Mini PCs, it requires the use of original wires.
  • Note: The GPU is not included.

Valve Steam Support lists front USB-A ports as USB 3.2 Gen 1 and rear USB-A ports as USB 2.0, and says the rear USB-C port uses a separate bus. Tom’s Hardware reported on August 11, 2026, that this rear USB-C connection is USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps), not USB4 or Thunderbolt. The reported eGPU setup did not use USB-C as its GPU data connection.

The machine also has HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 for external displays. Display outputs and a USB-C connector do not, on their own, provide the PCIe tunneling used by a conventional USB4- or Thunderbolt-connected eGPU enclosure. The cited Valve documentation does not document that kind of eGPU support.

  • Note: The OCulink interface does not support hot plugging, and the computer needs to be turned off to unplug the cable.

The reported M.2-to-OCuLink workaround

Tom’s Hardware reported one user’s setup with an AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, an M.2-to-OCuLink adapter, and an Aoostar EG01 dock. It uses the current machine’s single M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe slot rather than its USB-C port.

  1. Repurpose the M.2 slot: The adapter occupies the slot otherwise used for the NVMe drive.
  2. Relocate the boot drive: In the reported configuration, the user moved the boot drive to a USB-C-to-NVMe enclosure.
  3. Accommodate the hardware: The report describes cable routing and a case modification. The machine was being run open while that modification remained unfinished.

This is an advanced modification with storage and chassis consequences, not a simple external plug-in. It is a reported route for one current Valve machine—not official compatibility certification, a validated procedure for other Steam Machines, or evidence that every model can use an eGPU. Valve Support cautions that Valve is not responsible for screws or components damaged while users open or modify the machine. The available information does not settle warranty coverage across vendors or jurisdictions.

What performance can you expect?

The Tom’s Hardware report attributes “over 100 FPS” in Crimson Desert at the High preset to the user’s RX 9070 XT setup. That is a single user-reported result, not a controlled comparison against the built-in GPU at matching settings. It cannot establish a typical performance uplift or predict results in other games or configurations.

The sources do not provide a validated, model-by-model compatibility matrix or a population-level figure for Steam Machine eGPU use. They also do not establish how reliably other combinations of operating system, GPU, adapter, and dock will be recognized. Treat compatibility and game performance as configuration-specific.

What to check before buying eGPU hardware

  • Identify the manufacturer and exact Steam Machine model; do not rely on the family name or connector shape.
  • Confirm the host connection the eGPU requires. USB-C alone does not establish USB4 or Thunderbolt support.
  • If considering the reported M.2-to-OCuLink route, account for the occupied NVMe slot, boot-drive relocation, cabling, and case changes.
  • Check whether the operating system and GPU drivers recognize the specific combination; the reported example does not validate other combinations.
  • Look for performance results for the same game and settings rather than treating one reported frame rate as a general benchmark.
