Start by reproducing the problem and capturing the first useful console or build error. Then identify whether it belongs to compilation, input, asset handling, or publishing—and fix and verify one layer at a time. The right steps depend on the engine and platform: a Unity compilation fix, for example, does not apply to a Decentraland or Roblox project.
Start with a reproducible failure
Before changing code or regenerating assets, record the exact conditions under which the issue appears. A concrete report helps you—and any AI assistant you ask—distinguish a cause from a guess.
- Write down what the player did, what you expected, and what happened instead.
- Note the engine and version, the affected platform, and whether the issue occurs in the editor, preview, or deployed build.
- Copy the first relevant console or build error and the surrounding log lines. Later errors may be consequences of the first failure.
- Change one layer at a time, then repeat the same steps in the affected build and input mode.
The Decentraland SDK 7 troubleshooting guide advises: “Paste the error message from the console, or describe what’s not behaving as expected, and it can usually find the problem in your scene’s code and fix it for you.” Treat an assistant’s suggested fix as a proposal: inspect it, compile and run the project, and confirm the result rather than relying on plausible-looking generated code.
Why does the game fail to compile, start, or finish loading?
Unity: clear compilation errors before investigating later symptoms
If Unity offers Safe Mode after detecting script compilation errors, use it to address those errors before allowing a full project import. Unity lists editor-version mismatches, missing or incorrect package versions, script errors, and problematic version-control changes among possible causes. Resolve the earliest relevant compile error first: Unity warns that ignored compile errors can block Play Mode or builds and lead to secondary package or asset-import problems. See the Unity 6.5 Safe Mode documentation.

Decentraland SDK 7: check environment and SDK version
For a Decentraland SDK 7 project, the troubleshooting guide says the development environment requires Node 20 or newer when npm run start produces no browser window or preview URL. For a stuck loading screen or critical-error banner, it advises checking that the project uses the latest SDK version. These instructions are specific to that SDK and can change; check the current Decentraland troubleshooting guide and your project’s compatibility before upgrading dependencies.
Why are my controls not working?
Trace the action from the player’s input to the game response, and test each input method the game claims to support. A failed action can have several different causes; a control prompt that names the wrong button is not the same problem as navigation code that ignores a controller.
- Check the action: confirm that the intended action exists in the project’s input configuration.
- Check the mapping: verify that the expected keyboard key, controller button, or touch input is mapped to that action.
- Check the response: confirm that gameplay code receives the action and triggers the expected behavior.
- Check the prompt: make sure the button or command shown to the player matches the active mapping.
- Repeat for each supported input method: test keyboard, controller, and touch separately where applicable.
For a controller-specific issue, a compatible PC controller can be an optional test device, but confirm that the game and platform support it and check the actual mappings. Microsoft’s GDK quality criteria classify incorrect button imagery or commands and controller-navigation failures as title-quality issues for Xbox One, Xbox Series, and Windows. They are a quality taxonomy, not a tutorial for repairing mappings or a recommendation for particular hardware. See Microsoft’s XR003 title-quality criteria.

Why are assets missing in the game?
First establish whether the game cannot find the file, cannot import or convert it, excludes it from the build, or displays it differently at runtime. Check the ordinary project references before changing platform-specific settings.

- Look for import errors, missing package dependencies, and broken scene or prefab references.
- Confirm that the asset is included in the build and that its format is supported on the target platform.
- If the file is present and referenced correctly, check whether platform conversion or level-of-detail (LOD) generation is still in progress.
Decentraland-specific clipping and conversion behavior
Decentraland’s SDK 7 guide describes platform-specific cases: models extending beyond scene boundaries can be clipped; textures in converted 3D models are limited to 512×512 pixels; and distant LOD assets can appear missing while generation is incomplete. These are Decentraland details, not general limits for Unity, Roblox, or other engines. For a model that looks different after deployment, the guide recommends comparing asset-bundle behavior, including its documented preview flag &DISABLE_ASSET_BUNDLES, and reproducing optimized assets in preview before publishing. Consult the Decentraland SDK 7 troubleshooting guide for the platform-specific steps.

Why does the game look fine in preview but broken after publishing?
A preview and deployed game can differ while assets are being converted, a platform-specific job is pending, or clients are retaining cached content. Check deployment and conversion status, compare the affected platforms, and allow time for a confirmed queue to finish before publishing again.
Decentraland documents that Windows and Mac conversions can complete at different times, so players may temporarily see different versions; client caches can also preserve older content. Its guide warns that publishing again can send a conversion job to the back of the queue. Check whether the upload has propagated and whether scene boundaries or platform conversion explain the difference. If a platform reports conversion failure, follow its current recovery and reporting instructions rather than repeatedly republishing. These details apply to Decentraland; use the corresponding status and deployment guidance for other platforms. See the Decentraland troubleshooting guide.

Do generated mechanics need accessibility and content checks?
Yes. A mechanic can work as intended for its creator and still exclude players or violate a platform’s release requirements. Test what players must do, not only whether the generated code runs.

Check whether required actions are accessible
Microsoft notes that dynamically generated levels may require simultaneous button presses that some people with fine-motor disabilities cannot perform. Consider whether remapping, alternate controls, adjustable difficulty, or another route through the challenge would make it usable. These are design options, not requirements specified by the source. See Microsoft’s accessibility guidance for gaming AI experiences.

Check Roblox AI and maturity disclosures
For Roblox, creators remain responsible for content delivered to users even when they use third-party generative tools. Roblox requires disclosure of AI interactions in its Content Maturity questionnaire; extended AI interactions, such as continuous chatbot-like play or cross-session memory, need a Restricted maturity label. Check the Roblox Creator Hub guidance on games with generative AI before release, since platform policies can change.
What asset-generation research does—and does not—show
A 2025 user study by Kaisei Fukaya, Damon Daylamani-Zad, and Harry Agius reported findings from 16 game designers and developers using AI-driven graphical asset-generation tools. Participants favored using generation early to explore variations, then improving selected assets; they also identified integration with existing tools and common, manipulable formats as needs. The participant count describes that study, not how frequently AI-generated games have bugs and not a representative industry-wide prevalence rate. Read the 2025 paper on heuristics for AI-driven graphical asset-generation tools.
