Choose Amazon Q Developer if you want AWS’s own coding assistant, with IDE and CLI features and a Free or Pro service tier. They are different products, not two versions of the same assistant. For teams considering Q’s IDE plugins, AWS’s announced end-of-support date—April 30, 2027—is also an important planning constraint.
What is the difference?
Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding tool. When configured for Bedrock, it calls Claude models through Amazon Bedrock, with access and configuration tied to AWS credentials, IAM, region, and model selection. Amazon Q Developer is AWS’s coding assistant for IDE and CLI workflows; AWS describes it as a conversational assistant for understanding, building, extending, and operating AWS applications. Its documented capabilities include code chat and generation, inline suggestions, security scanning, code transformation, upgrades, optimization, and refactoring.
That distinction matters: this is a choice between using Claude Code with Bedrock inference and adopting AWS’s assistant experience. Claude Code on Bedrock is not the same as “Claude Platform on AWS,” a separate Anthropic-operated service. AWS explains the operator distinction in its Claude Platform on AWS vs. Amazon Bedrock comparison.
Which assistant better fits your team?
| If your priority is… | Better fit to evaluate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Using Claude Code specifically | Claude Code on Bedrock | It preserves the Claude Code tool while routing inference through Bedrock. |
| AWS-oriented IDE and CLI assistant features | Amazon Q Developer | Q provides AWS’s own assistant workflows, including chat, inline suggestions, and code-related actions. |
| Choosing Claude models and versions directly | Claude Code on Bedrock | Teams select available Bedrock models or aliases and can pin versions for team deployments. |
| A per-user subscription tier | Amazon Q Developer Pro | AWS lists Pro at $19 per user per month; Free is also available with limits. |
| Keeping an IDE plugin beyond April 2027 | Neither without lifecycle planning | AWS says support for Q Developer IDE plugins ends April 30, 2027. Claude Code’s continued model and Bedrock availability should be checked for the team’s region and deployment. |
Setup, identity, and administration
Claude Code on Bedrock
Setup requires an AWS account with Bedrock enabled, access to the desired Anthropic models, and suitable IAM permissions. Anthropic’s Bedrock setup guide describes using the setup wizard or configuring Bedrock manually with CLAUDE_CODE_USE_BEDROCK=1. AWS region and credentials are taken from the AWS environment or profile; the team must also select model IDs or aliases. Available models and inference options can vary by account and region.
#1 Best Overall
- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
Anthropic recommends pinning model versions for team deployments because aliases and defaults can change. The guide says this integration uses the Bedrock Invoke API rather than the Converse API, and WebSearch is unavailable on Bedrock. These details can affect how you configure shared environments and which tool features are available.
Amazon Q Developer
Q’s identity path depends on how it is used. AWS documents free Builder ID access for IDE use and organizational access through IAM Identity Center with a Pro subscription. Q’s tiers also differ in limits and administration features. Check AWS’s current IDE installation and sign-in guide and Free and Pro tier documentation against your supported IDE versions and organization setup.

- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
How the costs compare
The cost models are not directly equivalent. Amazon Q Developer Pro is a per-user subscription; Claude Code on Bedrock incurs metered charges for model inference. AWS’s pricing page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists Q Pro at $19 per user per month and the Q Free tier at 50 included agentic requests per month. Those figures and plan terms can change; consult AWS’s current Q Developer pricing page before budgeting.
Bedrock cost depends on model, region, and actual usage. Without a team’s request volume and expected token usage, there is no reliable all-in comparison. Estimate both sides using current Bedrock regional rates and the Q tier that matches the intended users; do not compare Q’s subscription price with a guessed Bedrock bill.

Data use and governance
AWS says certain content from the Q Developer Free tier—including questions, responses, and generated code—may be used for service improvement. AWS says it does not use Q Developer Pro content for that purpose. Review the Q Developer service-improvement policy, the applicable service terms, settings, and your organization’s requirements before choosing a tier.
For Claude Code on Bedrock, confirm the AWS service terms and account settings that apply to your deployment. The fact that inference runs through Bedrock does not, by itself, settle every privacy, retention, or compliance question for a company. The separate AWS comparison of Claude Platform on AWS and Bedrock concerns different operators and processing arrangements; it should not be treated as a substitute for reviewing the terms governing Claude Code on Bedrock.

Plan around Amazon Q’s IDE plugin end-of-support date
AWS states: “On April 30, 2027, AWS will discontinue support for Amazon Q Developer IDE plugins.” AWS directs users seeking similar capabilities to Kiro, noting that inline suggestions, chat, and code generation are available there. This notice is specifically about Q Developer IDE plugins; it is not a claim that every Q interface or AWS developer product ends on that date. Read the official end-of-support notice and verify its current status before making a long-term IDE decision.

A practical decision checklist
- Start with the desired workflow: decide whether developers need Claude Code itself or prefer AWS’s Q assistant in their IDE and CLI.
- Check access and administration: for Bedrock, confirm model access, IAM, credentials, region, and chosen model versions; for Q, confirm the Builder ID or IAM Identity Center route and required tier.
- Compare real costs: estimate Q seats and Bedrock inference usage separately, using current plan terms and regional rates.
- Review data policy: map the actual tier, AWS settings, and contractual terms to company requirements rather than relying on a product label alone.
- Account for lifecycle: if Q IDE plugins are central to the workflow, plan for AWS’s announced 2027 support change and assess its suggested migration path.
