A BMC is the embedded device or service that handles server management; Redfish is a standard for accessing management functions and data. They are related, not competing alternatives: a BMC may provide a Redfish service, but support and feature coverage depend on the server model and firmware.
What does BMC mean?
A baseboard management controller (BMC) is an embedded device or service, typically an independent microprocessor or system-on-chip with firmware. It performs out-of-band monitoring and management tasks, meaning administrators can manage the server through a management path separate from its main operating system. The BMC describes the management component or service, not a particular way of communicating with it. DMTF’s Redfish materials describe the role of a BMC in this context.
What is Redfish?
Redfish is a DMTF standard for accessing server-management information and carrying out management operations. It defines RESTful interface semantics and a schema-based data model, with data commonly represented in JSON. The DMTF specification states: “Redfish is a standard that uses RESTful interface semantics to access a schema based data model to conduct management operations.” See the Redfish Specification DSP0266.
Redfish is designed for interoperable, remote, out-of-band management across a range of systems, including large-scale environments. It describes the interface and model that a management service can implement; it is not itself a controller.

BMC vs. Redfish at a glance
| Comparison | BMC | Redfish |
|---|---|---|
| What it names | An embedded management device or service. | A management standard and interface. |
| Main role | Performs or hosts out-of-band monitoring and management functions. | Defines how clients access management operations and data. |
| How it works | Uses its own hardware and firmware implementation. | Uses RESTful semantics and a schema-based model, commonly represented in JSON. |
| Variation | Hardware, firmware, and available functions vary by platform. | The specification includes required and optional elements and permits OEM-specific extensions. |
How do BMCs and Redfish work together?
A server’s BMC can expose a Redfish service. A management application or administrator can then use that service to retrieve information or request supported operations through the standard interface. The BMC remains the embedded management component; Redfish is one possible interface it offers.
Do not assume that every BMC supports Redfish, or that two Redfish-capable servers expose identical features. The standard’s optional elements and allowance for OEM-specific extensions mean implementations can differ. Redfish also does not necessarily replace every legacy or vendor-specific management interface.

How to check Redfish support on a server
- Identify the exact server model and firmware. Support can vary between models and firmware releases, even within one vendor’s product range.
- Check the model-specific documentation. Look for a Redfish service or Redfish support statement in the server or BMC documentation. Do not treat the presence of a BMC as proof that Redfish is available.
- Verify the functions you need. Confirm that the documented implementation covers the specific management information and operations required; a general Redfish support statement does not establish that every standard feature is implemented.
Which term should you use?
- Use BMC when you mean the embedded controller or service responsible for out-of-band management.
- Use Redfish when you mean the standard interface and data model used to access management capabilities.
- When assessing compatibility, name the server model and firmware and check documented Redfish feature coverage rather than treating the terms as interchangeable.
Current Redfish specification releases
As listed by DMTF on 16 January 2026, the Redfish Specification DSP0266 is version 1.23.1 and the Redfish Data Model Specification DSP0268 is version 2025.4. These release details can change; consult the official DMTF Redfish release listing for the current versions.
