What the Andean Cat Alliance does
The Andean Cat Alliance (Alianza Gato Andino, AGA) is a multinational, interdisciplinary network founded in 1999 by conservation professionals from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru. Its purpose is to coordinate conservation of the Andean cat and its habitat across the species’ range. AGA organizes its work around research, conservation, and education and training, with actions adapted to local conditions and carried out with communities. How monitoring improves knowledge of the cat
Andean cats are elusive, and conservation planning depends on knowing where they occur and what threats they face. AGA’s “In the field 24/7” program combines camera trapping with genetic analysis to fill gaps in the species’ distribution map and investigate possible impacts from diseases and parasites transmitted by domestic animals. Camera traps provide non-invasive records of wildlife; genetic work adds another source of information. These methods improve knowledge, but the program’s stated aims should not be mistaken for proof that a particular population has increased. See AGA’s program information.
How herders can protect livestock without harming native carnivores
Livestock losses can trigger retaliation against predators. AGA explains that pumas or culpeo foxes may prey on livestock, after which herders can target carnivores broadly—including Andean cats, even when they were not responsible for the loss. Its mitigation work helps herders protect animals while reducing pressure on native carnivores.

- Livestock guard dogs: Dogs can help deter predators, but their suitability may depend on local conditions; AGA notes they may need adaptation to the climate.
- Deterrent lights and improved corrals: These are among the measures used to reduce livestock vulnerability.
- Monitoring and community awareness: Ongoing carnivore monitoring and discussion with communities complement practical protection measures.
These approaches are intended to reduce conflict and retaliatory killing; the program descriptions do not provide a quantified reduction in Andean cat deaths. AGA outlines its work on coexistence and conflict mitigation.
Why livelihoods and education are part of conservation

Through CATcrafts, AGA works with women artisans to value traditional techniques and raw materials, improve product quality and identify fair-trade sales channels. Education and responsible pet ownership
AGA adapts educational activities for different audiences, from school students to government technical staff. Its Pawsitive Actions program promotes responsible ownership of dogs and cats because domestic animals can attack wildlife and may transmit disease. What population estimates say—and what they do not
Population figures need a date and source. AGA’s July 2022–June 2023 annual report, published in 2024, states that fewer than 1,400 adult Andean cats are estimated to roam the high Andes and northern Patagonia. AGA’s homepage, retrieved in 2026, displays 2,177 adult cats and more than 1,000,000 km² of territory, but the page does not show a date or methodology for the adult-cat figure. Because the two figures differ and the homepage figure is undated, it should not be treated as a verified current estimate. How to judge the programs’ contribution
The programs address different links in the conservation challenge rather than competing solutions. Monitoring targets gaps in knowledge; livestock measures address conflict; CATcrafts supports livelihood alternatives; and education and responsible pet ownership address awareness and domestic-animal impacts. The work involves researchers, herders, artisans, students, officials and other community members. AGA’s program descriptions set out activities and goals, but those descriptions alone do not establish measured population-level outcomes.
