Choose Windows 11 if your PC qualifies and you depend on Windows-only apps, devices, or games. Choose Linux if the programs and hardware you rely on are supported by a specific Linux distribution and you are comfortable checking compatibility and learning a different setup. The right answer depends less on which OS is “best” in general than on what you need your PC to do.
Windows 11 and Linux at a glance
Linux is not one uniform desktop OS: distributions such as Ubuntu and Linux Mint have their own releases, requirements, and support periods. The Linux figures below apply to the named releases, not to every Linux distribution.
| Decision point | Windows 11 | Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS | Linux Mint LTS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardware requirements | Microsoft lists a supported processor, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot capability, at least 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of storage among the requirements. Check the exact PC rather than assuming it qualifies based on age or speed. (Microsoft, “Windows 11 System Requirements”) | Canonical specifies a 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, at least 6 GB of RAM, and 25 GB of free storage for a comfortable experience. (Canonical, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release notes) | The cited Linux Mint FAQ does not state hardware requirements that can be compared here. |
| Support period | Home and Pro are listed as in support, but individual Windows 11 releases have separate end-of-updates dates. (Microsoft, Windows lifecycle product page) | Canonical says this release receives five years of security updates and critical bug fixes, through April 2031. Ubuntu Pro offers a stated ten-year Expanded Security Maintenance option. (Canonical, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release notes) | Linux Mint says its LTS releases are supported for five years. (Linux Mint FAQ) |
| App and game fit | A practical choice when a required app, game, or device depends on Windows; check the vendor’s supported OS and version. | Some Windows games may work through Steam Play, but support varies by title. Check each game and its hardware requirements. (Steam Support, “Game is not available on your current platform”) | Compatibility depends on the distribution, release, and specific app or game; verify before switching. |
| Initial setup | Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use require an internet connection and Microsoft account during initial setup. | Installing or trying Ubuntu can involve creating bootable USB media. (Canonical, Ubuntu download page) | Installation steps and available options depend on the release; consult the distribution’s instructions before changing partitions or installing. |
First check whether your PC can run Windows 11
Windows 11 has a hardware eligibility gate, so do not treat a fast processor or a recent purchase as proof that the PC qualifies. Microsoft’s requirements include processor support, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot capability, 4 GB of memory, and 64 GB of storage. The list is not a substitute for checking the specific computer: firmware settings and exact processor model matter.
- Check Microsoft’s current Windows 11 system requirements and verify the exact PC model and processor.
- Confirm that TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot capability are present; do not infer either from the computer’s general performance.
- For a planned Linux installation, separately check the exact model’s Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, printer, and peripheral support. Requirements published for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS do not establish compatibility for every device or another distribution.
If buying a computer for Linux, Canonical describes Ubuntu working out of the box on a range of partner systems, including some Dell and HP lines. That general description is not a guarantee for every model or configuration, so verify the precise model and support commitment before purchase.

Check support for the version you will actually use
Support applies to releases and editions, not just to the operating-system name. Microsoft lists Windows 11 Home and Pro as in support, while each Windows 11 release has its own end-of-updates date. Check the installed Windows version and edition against Microsoft’s lifecycle information rather than assuming every installation has the same remaining support.
Windows 10 version 22H2 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft describes a paid Extended Security Updates option for eligible users. If your PC cannot run Windows 11, do not treat an unsupported Windows installation or an informal workaround as a supported long-term solution.

On Linux, check the support page for the distribution and release you intend to install. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS has the support period shown above; Linux Mint’s five-year statement applies to its LTS releases. A support period for one release should not be carried over to a different version or distribution.
Make a list of the apps and devices you cannot give up
Before changing operating systems, write down the exact applications and peripherals you use, including any plugins, file formats, collaboration tools, and device utilities they depend on. Then check the software vendor’s supported operating systems for the specific app version you need. A Linux alternative may exist without being identical, compatible with the same files, or accepted by your workplace.

Adobe’s cited Creative Cloud requirements list supported Windows versions for many current desktop apps and do not list Linux as a supported desktop system. That is a concrete example of why vendor support matters; it is not a statement about every application.
For hardware, check the exact model of each essential device, particularly printers, Wi-Fi adapters, graphics hardware, audio interfaces, and specialist peripherals. A computer that starts a Linux desktop is not necessarily a computer on which all of those devices work as needed.

Can Linux run your Windows games?
Sometimes, but do not decide based on a blanket claim that “Linux supports games.” Steam says Linux users may be able to use Steam Play to potentially play some Windows-only games; it does not promise that every title works. Compatibility is title-specific.
- Check every game you consider essential, not just the most popular one.
- Verify the game’s operating-system and hardware requirements, and check whether its launcher, anti-cheat system, controller, and graphics features work in your intended setup.
- If one required title depends on Windows, plan around that requirement instead of assuming a compatibility layer will solve it.
What switching to Linux involves
Trying Ubuntu can require downloading an image and creating bootable USB media. Canonical’s download instructions describe USB as an installation option and explain how to create the media. A USB flash drive can serve as installation media; the cited instructions do not establish a required brand or capacity.

- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage

Before installing, back up important files and make sure you understand whether the installer will use the whole disk or change partitions. If you are unsure, pause rather than risking data loss. You can use a trial or live environment where available to check basic hardware and workflow before committing, but that test alone cannot guarantee every app or device will work after installation.
Linux also changes how you find and manage software, handle updates, and troubleshoot problems. Whether that feels straightforward depends on your experience and the distribution. Compare the setup and maintenance involved with your willingness to learn, rather than assuming Linux is automatically easier or harder.
Which operating system should you choose?
Choose Windows 11 when
- Your PC meets Microsoft’s requirements and you rely on software, peripherals, or games that require Windows.
- You need a professional application whose vendor does not support Linux.
- You want to keep a workflow built around Windows and do not want to verify compatibility app by app.
Choose a Linux distribution when
- Your essential apps and devices are confirmed to work with the specific distribution and release you plan to use.
- Your must-play games have been checked individually, and you accept that Steam Play does not guarantee compatibility.
- You are comfortable with a different installation, software-management, and troubleshooting workflow.
Pause and verify before choosing
- Your PC is not confirmed to meet Windows 11 requirements, or its Linux hardware support is uncertain.
- A single work app, device, or game is essential and you have not checked its vendor or compatibility information.
- You have not backed up your files or are unsure how an installation would affect the disk.
Available evidence here does not establish that one operating system is universally faster, safer, more private, or easier. Those outcomes depend on hardware, configuration, workload, threat model, and user skill; decide from your specific requirements rather than a general ranking.
