Most ordinary Windows apps can run on a Windows 11 laptop with an Arm processor: native Arm64 apps run directly, while many x86 and x64 apps run through emulation. But emulation does not translate the drivers some apps and devices need. If an installer, printer, game, or utility fails, first identify whether the problem is the app build, the Windows version, or an unsupported driver.
Why an app may not work on a Windows on Arm laptop
Windows on Arm uses an Arm processor, while many Windows programs were written for x86 or x64 processors. On Windows 11, emulation can run many such apps; a native Arm64 version is generally the most direct option. Microsoft says Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism and currently describes Prism as available on Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon X series processors, with availability coming to other Windows 11 devices. Check Microsoft’s current Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ and your laptop’s version, since support and availability can change.
Windows 10 Arm is different: Microsoft says x64 apps do not run on it. Do not assume guidance for Windows 11 applies to an older Windows 10 Arm device.
App emulation does not cover drivers
An app may open under emulation yet fail when it tries to use a driver. Kernel-mode, UMDF, and print drivers must be built for the operating system’s processor architecture; emulating an x86 or x64 app does not make its incompatible driver work. Microsoft puts the practical consequence plainly: “If a driver doesn’t work, the app or hardware that relies on it doesn’t work either (at least not fully).” See Microsoft’s Windows on Arm app troubleshooting guidance.

Some apps are especially driver-dependent
Third-party antivirus, printing or PDF tools, assistive technology, virtualization software, Windows-customization utilities, and games that rely on anti-cheat drivers can have requirements emulation cannot satisfy. Check the software maker’s support information for your exact app and Windows configuration, rather than treating the ability to install or launch as proof that every feature works.
Work through these checks in order
- Record your Windows version and app version. Open Settings > System > About to check Windows details, then note the exact app version and laptop model. Compatibility depends on the Windows generation and can vary between app releases.
- Check the publisher’s supported builds. Look for a native Arm64 download first. If none is offered, see whether the publisher specifically supports the x86 or x64 version on Windows 11 Arm. Apps do not have to come from Microsoft Store, but they still need to be compatible.
- Update the app. Install available updates and consult the publisher’s compatibility notes. A newer release may add Arm support or address a compatibility issue; do not assume that an update will fix an unsupported driver.
- For an older app, try Windows’ compatibility troubleshooter. Microsoft recommends the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter for older-app issues. It may help with an app’s compatibility settings, but it is not an Arm-specific guarantee and cannot supply or translate a missing driver. - If a feature or connected device fails, investigate its driver. Ask the app or hardware maker whether an Arm64 driver is available and whether your model and Windows version are supported. An x86 or x64 driver cannot be made compatible just by running the parent app through emulation.
- If no supported app build or driver exists, choose a supported alternative. Ask the publisher about an Arm version, use software or hardware confirmed to support your configuration, or use a compatible x64 computer for that workload.
Fix printer setup problems
If a printer manufacturer’s setup program fails on an Arm PC, try Windows’ own add-printer process instead. Microsoft directs users to its instructions for adding or installing a printer for this situation.

Microsoft says most printers, including Mopria-compatible models, are supported, but support for a particular printer and its features depends on an in-box Windows driver or an Arm64 driver from the manufacturer. If basic printing works but scanning, status monitoring, or another feature does not, ask the printer maker whether that feature’s driver or utility supports Windows on Arm. Repeating the manufacturer’s installer will not resolve an architecture mismatch.

For a game that will not start or connect, check the publisher’s current Windows on Arm support statement, with particular attention to anti-cheat. Microsoft warns that games depending on anti-cheat drivers not designed for Windows 11 Arm may not work. A compatibility setting or app emulator is not a reliable workaround for an unsupported anti-cheat driver.

Microsoft’s FAQ points readers to Works on Windows on Arm, an open-source, third-party compatibility list that receives Microsoft contributions. It can be a useful reference, but it is not a Microsoft-owned guarantee that a listed app or every feature will work on a particular laptop. Confirm important requirements with the app or game publisher.
Apply the same caution to antivirus, virtualization, assistive technology, PDF or printing utilities, and programs that modify Windows: ask the publisher whether the exact version supports your Arm device and whether it needs an Arm64 driver.
How to judge whether a proposed fix is relevant
- The app itself is the problem: Check for an Arm64 build, a supported x86/x64 version, and updates. Emulation may be sufficient for an ordinary app, but launch success alone does not establish full feature support.
- A device or feature is the problem: Check for an Arm64 driver from the hardware or software vendor. App compatibility mode cannot replace one.
- The Windows version is the problem: Verify whether the publisher supports your edition and version. Windows 10 Arm and Windows 11 Arm do not have identical app support.
- A game or protected utility is the problem: Check with its publisher, especially when anti-cheat or other system-level components are involved.
A generic adapter or PC-repair utility cannot make an unsupported processor architecture or driver compatible. Match the remedy to the failing component: app build, driver, Windows version, or publisher support.
