Android Auto Navigation Troubleshooting: Common Problems and Fixes

Troubleshoot Android Auto navigation by symptom: compatibility, USB or wireless connection, destination entry, voice and volume, or GPS accuracy.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Android Auto navigation will not connect, show a map, accept a destination, or give spoken directions, first identify whether the issue is compatibility, a wired or wireless connection, the navigation app, voice or volume, or GPS accuracy. The right fix depends on the symptom: a cable check may help a wired connection, but it is not a GPS fix.

Start by identifying the problem

Android Auto is built into compatible phones; you do not need to install a separate Android Auto app from the Play Store to use the car display. You do need a phone and car or stereo that support Android Auto and the connection mode you plan to use. Google explains current compatibility requirements.

  • No connection or display: Check phone and vehicle compatibility, then troubleshoot USB or wireless setup.
  • Map appears, but destination entry does not work: Check whether the car is in Park and which navigation app is open.
  • Voice commands or spoken guidance fail: Check the listening prompt, microphone, and separate vehicle volume controls.
  • Position is missing or inaccurate: Treat this as a location problem, not automatically as a connection problem; the guidance below does not establish a specific GPS fix.

Check phone and car compatibility

Requirements vary by connection type, vehicle, region, and device. Google’s current help page lists Android 9.0 (Pie) or higher and an active data plan for wired Android Auto. For wireless projection, it lists a compatible phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support; the page describes wireless compatibility for phones running Android 11.0. A compatible car or stereo is required for either mode. Android Auto is not available on Android (Go edition), and most features may not work outside Google’s listed countries. Check Google’s compatibility guidance and your phone or vehicle manufacturer’s information for current requirements.

Connection What it requires First check
Wired A compatible phone and car or stereo, a suitable USB connection, and the listed Android 9.0-or-higher requirement and active data plan. Confirm the vehicle supports Android Auto, then inspect the cable, port, and infotainment settings.
Wireless A compatible phone and car or stereo, an active data plan, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support; Google’s page describes compatible phones running Android 11.0. Confirm wireless compatibility for both devices and keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on during initial setup.

If wired Android Auto will not connect

  1. Check that the vehicle supports Android Auto. A USB port alone does not mean a car supports Android Auto. Confirm the correct port and check the vehicle manual or manufacturer’s support information.
  2. Inspect the cable and connectors. Google recommends a high-quality USB cable under 1 metre (3 feet), with no hub or extension. Try the cable supplied with the phone or a cable certified by the USB Implementers Forum. Match the cable connector to the phone and the vehicle port.
  3. Check the infotainment system. Make sure Android Auto is enabled in the vehicle settings, then restart the infotainment system. Menu names and steps differ by vehicle, so use the manual if you cannot find the setting. See Google’s connection troubleshooting guidance.
  4. Check an aftermarket receiver. If the car uses an aftermarket stereo, look for a firmware update from its manufacturer.
  5. For trouble connecting a second car, clear the saved-car connection. Google’s documented option is to forget previously connected cars in Android Auto settings, then connect again. Follow the current Google help instructions for the setting path, since labels can vary.

If wireless Android Auto will not start

  1. Confirm that both the phone and the car or stereo support wireless Android Auto. A vehicle’s wired compatibility does not by itself establish wireless compatibility.
  2. Check that the phone meets the wireless requirements, including 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, and verify any vehicle or regional requirements with the manufacturers.
  3. For the first wireless setup, pair the phone and car over Bluetooth. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services turned on during setup, as Google recommends.

These are setup checks, not a guaranteed remedy for an ongoing GPS accuracy problem. For current requirements, see Google’s wireless Android Auto setup guidance.

If you cannot search for or type a destination

First put the car in Park: Android Auto does not allow typing a destination on the car display while the vehicle is not parked. From the Android Auto launcher, open Google Maps or another compatible navigation app, such as Waze. In Google Maps, Recent, Categories, and Saved provide destination shortcuts; while parked, you can also enter an address or place and select the correct result if several appear. Google supports compatible navigation apps but does not rank them. See Google’s turn-by-turn navigation instructions.

If voice navigation or spoken guidance is not working

  • Wait for the tone. Hold the steering-wheel voice button until you hear the listening tone, then speak.
  • Reduce background noise. Road or cabin noise can interfere with voice recognition.
  • Check the microphone. If you use an aftermarket receiver, check its microphone and consult the receiver manufacturer if needed.
  • Adjust the right volume. Some vehicles control navigation, media, and voice volumes separately. Consult the vehicle owner’s manual to find the relevant controls.

Google’s voice-command and volume guidance covers these checks. A volume control for media may not change spoken navigation or voice-prompt volume.

If the map position is missing or inaccurate

The cited Android Auto guidance covers compatibility, connection setup, navigation workflows, voice, and volume; it does not provide a specific fix sequence for GPS signal loss or inaccurate location. Do not treat a cable swap or a Bluetooth pairing step as an established GPS remedy. For location-specific troubleshooting, consult current Google Maps or Android Auto support and the phone or vehicle manufacturer’s guidance.
