For the closest match to the original experience, run the DOS version of GW-BASIC inside DOSBox, then mount a folder containing your program files. On Windows, macOS, and Linux, the basic workflow is the same: keep a backup, make the files available to DOSBox, and load or run them from GW-BASIC. If a file is plain ASCII text, a modern editor may be enough to inspect or edit it; do not assume every .BAS file is text.
Choose a route before changing the files
The right approach depends on whether you need the original interpreter and what kind of file you have.
| Route | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Original GW-BASIC inside DOSBox | Running the original DOS interpreter on a current host operating system. | Requires the GW-BASIC executable, DOSBox, and basic DOS navigation. DOSBox can expose a host folder as a DOS drive. DOSBox v0.74-3 manual |
| PC-BASIC | Trying a modern interpreter instead of the original DOS executable. | A community-maintained reference describes PC-BASIC as a Python-based GW-BASIC 3.23 clone for Windows and Linux. Check the project’s current status and macOS support before relying on it. GW-BASIC.com software reference |
| QBasic | Trying a program saved as ASCII text. | The same community reference says QBasic can run most GW-BASIC programs saved as ASCII, not all programs or features. GW-BASIC.com software reference |
| Microsoft’s source archive | Historical study of the interpreter’s source code. | It is not a ready-to-run program: Microsoft says the repository has no build scripts or prebuilt executables. Microsoft GW-BASIC Interpreter Source Code |
Prepare a safe working copy
- Duplicate the original files. Experiment only on the copy until you know whether the program is readable text, tokenized, or protected.
- Keep the interpreter and program files together in a host folder, or note each folder’s location. You will mount the folder containing the programs in DOSBox. The DOS drive letter and host folder name are choices you make.
- Obtain a GW-BASIC executable from a source you trust. Microsoft’s repository is an archival source-code release, not an installer or binary download. Its README describes the interpreter source as of 1983 and says it contains neither tools needed to build executable binaries nor prebuilt executables. Microsoft’s repository README
Open and run a program with DOSBox
DOSBox’s v0.74-3 manual documents command-line use on Windows, Linux, and macOS (the manual calls the latter “MAC OS X”). It also explains that MOUNT maps a host directory to a drive inside the emulated DOS environment. For example, its manual shows MOUNT C C:GAMES. Replace the example path with the path to your own folder. DOSBox v0.74-3 manual
- Install and launch DOSBox for your operating system. On macOS, the cited manual documents starting DOSBox from Terminal, but it is an older manual; use current installation guidance for the DOSBox build you choose.
- Mount the folder containing your files. At the DOSBox prompt, enter a command in this form:
MOUNT C C:BASIC. Here,C:BASICis an illustrative Windows-style host path; adapt it to the actual path and DOSBox build on your computer. DOSBox maps that host folder to the DOS driveC:. - Switch to the mounted drive. Enter
C:at the DOSBox prompt, then use DOS commands such asDIRto check that your files are visible. - Start GW-BASIC. Launch the interpreter executable from its location in the mounted folder. The exact command depends on the executable’s name and where you placed it.
- Load or run the program. At the GW-BASIC prompt, use the interpreter’s supported file commands. The GW-BASIC reference manual documents
RUN filenameas loading the named file from disk into memory and running it. The manual also documents a command-line format that accepts a program filename; check the syntax for the interpreter version you are using. 1987 Microsoft MS-DOS GW-BASIC User’s Guide and User’s Reference
For example, if HELLO.BAS is visible on the mounted drive, you can try RUN "HELLO.BAS" from the GW-BASIC prompt. This is an illustrative command: use the filename and syntax appropriate to your interpreter and file.

- Broad Compatibility: This floppy disk reader is compatible with most PCs, laptops, and desktop computers with Windows 11/10/8.1/7/Vista/XP/2000 OS, but not compatible with Mac and Chrome. In Windows 11/10 systems, there has many show/hide options in File Explorer, so after opening "Windows File Explorer," you may not see the drive icon named "Floppy Disk Drive (A:)". Please open "Devices and Printers," right-click on the drive icon named "TEACV0.0" under "Devices," hover the cursor over "Browse Files," and then click on "Floppy Disk Drive (A:)," then you will see the contents of your disks
- Reminder: Not all of your disks can be read, which is due to their age, not the drive. Floppy disks were produced in the 1980s and 1990s and have a history of 30 to 40 years. Due to long storage times, some floppy disks may be corrupted, mouldy or dusty, so some of your floppy disks may not be successfully opened by our floppy disk drive, or the drive may initially be able to open some floppy disks but stop working due to dust on the disks. Therefore, please carefully check the status of the floppy disk before reading to avoid the drive stopping working due to floppy disk issues.
Edit the program without damaging its format
A .BAS extension does not prove that a file is plain text. Make a duplicate and inspect that copy with a text editor. If it contains readable BASIC lines, editing the text may be practical; preserve a separate original and save the edited copy in the format your interpreter expects.
If the file is not readable text, use a compatible BASIC interpreter to load and save it rather than treating it as ordinary text. The community reference describes PC-BASIC as supporting loading and saving protected programs, but that does not establish compatibility with every file. It also says QBasic can run most GW-BASIC programs saved as ASCII; that is not a guarantee that a particular program will work. GW-BASIC.com software reference

Windows
GW-BASIC is a legacy DOS program. A community reference says the 16-bit executable cannot run directly on modern 64-bit Windows and recommends DOSBox, so running it in an emulator is the practical route rather than attempting to launch it as a normal Windows application. Troubleshoot common problems
- The file does not appear in DOSBox: Check that you mounted the correct host directory and switched to the mapped DOS drive. Use
DIRto inspect the files visible inside DOSBox. - GW-BASIC reports that it cannot find the program: Confirm the filename and extension shown by
DIR, and make sure you are on the drive containing the file. - The file looks like gibberish in a text editor: Stop editing that copy as plain text. It may be tokenized or protected; try loading a duplicate in a compatible interpreter.
- The program loads but does not behave as expected in another interpreter: Compatibility is not guaranteed. Test with the original GW-BASIC interpreter in DOSBox when fidelity matters.
- You downloaded Microsoft’s repository expecting an executable: It is source code for historical reference and does not include a prebuilt binary or build scripts. Microsoft repository
