Choose the iMac if you want a complete desktop with a built-in 24-inch display, camera, and audio system. Choose the Mac mini if you already have a monitor and input devices, or want to choose those parts yourself. Compare the cost and compatibility of the whole setup—not just the computer.
What you are comparing
Apple’s lineup includes Mac mini models with M4 and M4 Pro, and iMac models with M4. These are not identical packages: the iMac combines the computer and display, while a typical Mac mini desktop setup uses a separately selected display and input devices. Apple’s Mac comparison page and official iMac specifications and Mac mini specifications provide model details; configurations and availability can vary by country and change over time.
Choose iMac if you want an all-in-one desk setup
Display, camera, and audio are integrated
The iMac has a built-in 24-inch 4.5K Retina display with a resolution of 4480 by 2520 pixels and listed brightness of 500 nits. Apple also lists a 12MP Center Stage camera and integrated speakers. In the four-port comparison configuration, Apple lists a Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse as included. Check the specific model and seller to confirm what comes in the box.
It suits a straightforward single-computer purchase
If you need a display, camera, speakers, keyboard, and mouse, the iMac brings many of those choices together in one product. It is the simpler route when you do not want to select and connect each component separately.

Choose Mac mini if you want a modular setup
Reuse gear or choose each component
The Mac mini is a compact desktop computer that lets you select a monitor, keyboard, and mouse or trackpad independently. It can be a sensible fit if you already own compatible peripherals or want to choose a display to suit your workspace. A display is sold separately for a typical desktop setup.
Budget for the complete setup
Compare the Mac mini’s price plus whatever your setup still needs. Depending on what you already own and how you work, that may include:
Rank #2
- Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
- 8-core CPU packs up to 3x faster performance to fly through workflows quicker than ever*
- 8-core GPU with up to 6x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games*
- 16-core Neural Engine for advanced machine learning
- 8GB of unified memory so everything you do is fast and fluid
- A monitor
- A keyboard and mouse or trackpad
- A webcam, if you need one beyond the camera options in your existing display or other equipment
- An adapter or dock, if needed for your connections
Not every buyer will need every item. Prices depend on the country, chosen configurations, and accessories, so compare current local checkout totals rather than assuming the computer-only prices represent equivalent setups.
Compare ports and display support against your devices
Port selection varies by model. Apple’s comparison lists three Thunderbolt 4 ports and HDMI for the Mac mini (M4), with Gigabit Ethernet or configurable 10Gb Ethernet. It distinguishes two iMac configurations: the two-port model lists two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports and two USB-C ports, while the four-port model lists four Thunderbolt 4 ports.

Before buying, write down the devices you plan to connect—such as external drives, wired accessories, and displays—and check the exact configuration’s ports and external-display support in Apple’s specifications. Do not assume every iMac with the same product name has the same port arrangement.

Apple’s comparison lists the Mac mini (M4) with a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB starting unified memory, and 256GB starting storage. Those are starting specifications, not a recommendation for every workload. Choose memory and storage for what you expect to run and keep on the computer, and verify the options available for the exact model before ordering.

The iMac comes in configurations with different M4 core counts and port arrangements. Performance depends on the particular chip and configuration as well as the workload; the cited specifications do not establish that one product family is universally faster than the other.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- List what you already own. If you have a suitable monitor and input devices, the Mac mini may let you reuse them. If you need an integrated display and core desk components, consider the iMac.
- Price the full setup locally. Add the Mac mini and any peripherals or adapters you still need, then compare that total with the iMac configuration you would actually buy.
- Check every connection. Confirm the chosen model’s port count and support for the displays and accessories you plan to use.
- Select a suitable configuration. Compare memory, storage, and chip options with your workload, rather than choosing on the product name alone.
- Verify the listing. Check Apple’s current specifications and the seller’s included accessories for your country and exact configuration.
