Developer Mode is for developing and testing apps; Retail Mode is for ordinary games and retail services. Press the controller’s Home button: if Dev Home opens, the console is in Developer Mode. To return to Retail Mode, open Dev Home, choose Leave developer mode, and let the console restart.
Identify where the problem occurs
The right fix depends on what you were doing when the error appeared. An activation-code problem happens in the activation flow; an app deployment problem happens while sending a development app to the console; a launch problem occurs when opening an app. Note the exact error text or code, the screen where it appears, and whether a console user is signed in.
- You want to play retail games or use retail services: switch to Retail Mode from Dev Home.
- You want to develop or test an app: stay in Developer Mode and follow the activation or deployment checks below.
Microsoft warns that games, apps, and Store or Live access problems may be related to the console being in Developer Mode. Microsoft’s Xbox Developer Mode FAQ explains the mode check and return-to-retail action.
Activate Developer Mode on a retail Xbox One
The activation procedure documented by Microsoft applies to a retail Xbox One. It uses the Dev Mode Activation app and a code entered through the developer portal; screens, app availability, eligibility rules, or portal steps may have changed since the instructions were published. Do not assume these steps establish support for Xbox Series X|S.

- Install the Dev Mode Activation app from the Xbox One store.
- Open the app and note the activation code it displays.
- Sign in to the developer portal, enter the displayed code, and complete the agreement and activation steps.
- Wait for activation to complete, then return to the console and reopen the activation app.
- Choose Switch and restart to enter Developer Mode.
The Microsoft instructions say account activations are limited but do not state a numeric allowance, so do not assume an account can activate unlimited consoles. See the Xbox One activation instructions for the documented flow.
Fix deployment errors and Visual Studio connection problems
Error 0x87e10008
If this error appears during deployment, make sure a user is signed in on the console, then retry. Microsoft states: “You must have a user signed in to deploy an app.”

Visual Studio cannot connect or deploy
These checks apply to development deployment, not every activation-app or retail app-launch failure:
- Confirm the console is in Developer Mode.
- Review the PC development setup and confirm the PC can reach or ping the console’s IP address.
- In Visual Studio, open the project’s Debug tab and select Universal (Unencrypted Protocol) for authentication.
- For better deployment performance, Microsoft recommends a wired network connection.
Follow the current Microsoft Developer Mode FAQ troubleshooting guidance if the deployment still fails.

If the activation app or a launched app still fails
There is no single documented fix in the available official guidance for every activation-app error or Developer Mode app-launch failure. Record the exact code or message, where it appears, and the action that triggered it; then check current Microsoft or Xbox support guidance for that specific error. The general Xbox support page for apps that will not start is Game or app won’t start. Avoid treating a factory reset, console replacement, or router purchase as a recommended fix without error-specific guidance.

Open Dev Home, select Leave developer mode, and allow the console to restart. After the restart, press Home to confirm that the ordinary retail Home experience appears rather than Dev Home. Microsoft identifies this as the way to return to retail use.
