Start by recording the exact NVIDIA installer message and checking the GPU’s status in Device Manager. Then confirm that the driver matches your GPU and Windows version. An installer error and a Device Manager error are different problems, and the right fix depends on which one you have.
1. Identify where the failure occurs
Before changing drivers, note the full installer message, any error code, and whether setup closes, freezes, or appears to finish. Also record your GPU model, Windows version, and whether the problem began after a Windows or driver update.
Check Windows’ device status: right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, double-click your NVIDIA GPU, and read the message under Device status on the General tab. Device Manager codes describe a Windows device state; they are not interchangeable with errors shown by the NVIDIA installer. Microsoft gives different guidance for each code in its Device Manager error-code reference.
2. Make sure you have the right driver
Use NVIDIA’s official driver selector to choose the product type, series, exact model, operating system, and driver type. Before installing, open the selected release page and verify that it lists your GPU and Windows version. A driver for a similar model or a different operating system is not a safe substitute.

If you have a notebook
Check your laptop maker’s support page for the certified driver recommended for your specific notebook. NVIDIA says its Game Ready and Studio drivers can install on supported notebook GPUs, but the notebook manufacturer provides certified drivers for that system and should also be checked for recommended updates. Laptop configurations can differ even when their GPU names are similar.
Driver versions and compatibility change over time. For example, NVIDIA’s GeForce Game Ready Driver 617.14 release page is dated September 22, 2026, and lists Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11 support. That release is an example, not a standing recommendation: confirm current availability and support for your exact GPU and operating system on the release page.

3. Retry the installation with minimal changes
- Download a fresh installer from NVIDIA’s official driver page or your PC manufacturer’s official support page. If the existing download might be incomplete, replace it rather than using a copy from a third-party site.
- Close other applications and run the downloaded installer. NVIDIA’s installation hints advise against using download-accelerator utilities and say not to run virus protection in the background during installation. Treat those as vendor troubleshooting suggestions, not a reason to leave security protection disabled generally; follow your security software’s and organization’s guidance.
- If setup offers Express and Custom (Advanced), choose Custom when you need to select components or try the clean-install option available in that installer. NVIDIA’s documented clean-install flow resets NVIDIA settings and profiles, so note any custom settings before proceeding. The components and screens vary by release.
NVIDIA’s installation guidance and documented install options are available in its driver installation hints. Its detailed clean-install instructions are from older documentation, so do not assume every current installer presents identical screens or choices.
4. Use the fix that matches the Device Manager code
In Device Manager, open the NVIDIA GPU’s Properties and read Device status. If Windows gives a code, follow the corresponding path rather than treating every code as a failed installer.

| Device Manager code | What Microsoft says | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Code 38 | A previous instance of the driver may still be loaded. | Restart Windows, as Microsoft recommends. |
| Code 39 | The driver may be corrupted or missing. | Manually reinstall the device driver. |
| Code 43 | Windows stopped the device because it reported problems. | Start with driver update or reinstall steps. If the code remains, consult the device documentation or contact the manufacturer; the code alone does not prove that the GPU is defective. |
| Code 52 | Windows cannot verify the driver’s digital signature. | Obtain the latest driver from the hardware manufacturer or contact it. |
Microsoft’s code descriptions and recommendations cover additional device states as well. Use the code actually shown for your GPU.
5. Roll back if the failure followed an update
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, Microsoft’s Device Manager workflow includes rolling back the driver. Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the NVIDIA GPU, select Properties, open the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if the option is available. Follow the prompts and restart if Windows requests it. The button may be unavailable when Windows has no earlier driver version to restore.

6. Update or reinstall through Windows when appropriate
If rollback does not fit the situation, or Windows identifies a driver problem, you can use Device Manager to update the driver, point Windows to a locally downloaded official driver, or uninstall the device and restart so Windows attempts to reinstall it. Microsoft documents these options in its driver update, rollback, and reinstall instructions. For a manual install, browse to the folder containing the official driver package you downloaded; do not select a driver intended for another GPU or operating system.
Microsoft advises getting drivers from the hardware manufacturer’s official site rather than other websites. If the PC maker supplies a certified notebook driver, use its support guidance when deciding whether to install that package or NVIDIA’s.

7. Separate a brief screen change from a persistent blank screen
A brief display interruption or resolution change during driver installation is described as normal in NVIDIA’s older installation documentation. If the screen stays blank after setup or does not recover, treat it as a Windows display-recovery problem rather than assuming the installer is still working.
Microsoft’s black or blank screen troubleshooting guide covers recovery steps such as starting in Safe Mode, updating or rolling back the graphics driver through Device Manager, and using System Restore when the problem began recently. Follow its current instructions for your version of Windows instead of repeatedly forcing shutdowns.
8. Know when to contact support
If the correct official package and the applicable Windows steps do not resolve the failure, contact NVIDIA or your PC manufacturer with details that let support distinguish a package problem from a device-status problem:
- GPU model and full PC or notebook model
- Windows version or build and NVIDIA driver version
- The complete installer message, any installer log or error code, and whether setup hangs or exits
- The Device Manager status code, if present
- Recent Windows or driver updates and when the issue began
There is no single remedy established for every NVIDIA installation failure. These details help support choose the next step for your particular hardware and Windows state.
