Choose based on whether you want a Google Doc or want to keep working with a Markdown file.
Choose the right Markdown workflow

Paste Markdown into a Google Doc
Use this when you want Markdown syntax converted into formatted content in a Google Doc, rather than preserving the text as an editable .md file.
- On a computer, open a file in Docs, Slides, or Drawings.
- Choose Tools > Preferences and enable Markdown.
- Copy the Markdown text.
- Open the Google Doc, right-click where you want the content, and choose Paste from Markdown.
Google says the Markdown is converted and pasted as Docs content. Its help lists italics, bold, strikethrough, links, and headings; headings can reach six levels. To create a heading, start at the beginning of a paragraph, type one to six # characters, add a space, and then type the heading text.

Open or edit an uploaded .md file
Use Markdown-file mode when your goal is to keep the document as Markdown while editing it. Google’s Markdown-file guide says the file stays in .md format and is not converted into a Google Docs file.
- Upload the
.mdfile to Google Drive. - Open it in Docs. Alternatively, in Docs choose File > Open > Upload; Google’s import instructions also describe opening a file uploaded through this route.
Some formatting can change in this mode. Google specifically warns that smart chips become text or links, web formatting (HTML) becomes plain text, and font colors, highlights, and text alignment are removed. If you need to recover the original, Google points to File > Version history.

Copy Docs content as Markdown
To put selected Google Docs content on the clipboard as Markdown, select the content, right-click it, and choose Copy as Markdown. You can then paste that text into another application. This copies the selection; it does not download a Markdown file.
Download a Google Doc as Markdown
To create a separate Markdown file from a Google Doc, open it and choose File > Download > Markdown (.md). Google describes the download as a Markdown file for use in another application.

What Markdown syntax is compatible?
Google’s published help identifies italics, bold, strikethrough, links, and headings as supported formatting. It describes headings through six levels. The pages do not provide an exhaustive compatibility matrix for every Markdown dialect, extension, or construct, so they do not establish that all Markdown syntax will convert as expected.
If a document depends on complex formatting or embedded content, inspect the converted or downloaded result in the app where you plan to use it. That check is especially important for Markdown-file editing when the document contains smart chips, HTML-based web formatting, color, highlights, or alignment.
