It is a nine-digit identifier used by maritime equipment such as Digital Selective Calling (DSC) radios and Automatic Identification System (AIS) equipment to identify a vessel or coast radio station. It is not a radio channel, a GPS position, or a boat-tracking service.
What an MMSI does on a boat
A properly programmed DSC radio uses the MMSI to identify the vessel in a digital alert. If the radio also has a working GPS connection, the alert can include the vessel’s position. The U.S. Coast Guard explains that a DSC distress alert can reach vessels and coast stations within range when the radio is properly programmed with both an MMSI and GPS input: Coast Guard marine communications guidance.
The MMSI identifies the transmitting vessel; GPS supplies coordinates. The identifier alone does not reveal a boat’s location, and an alert is not guaranteed to reach every responder. Radio range and correct equipment configuration matter. The Coast Guard’s marine distress communications guidance advises checking both the MMSI and GPS input.
Why the MMSI and GPS connection both matter
- MMSI: associates the digital transmission with a vessel or coast radio station.
- GPS input: supplies position data that can help recipients locate the vessel.
- DSC radio: sends the digital alert; its ability to transmit useful information depends on correct programming and available GPS data.
If you use a DSC radio, check that its own-ship MMSI is programmed correctly and that the radio is receiving GPS data. Consult the radio’s manual for the device-specific status indicators and setup steps.

Getting an MMSI in the United States
The U.S. Coast Guard’s Rescue 21 for Boaters page points recreational boaters to Boat U.S. and Sea Tow MMSI programs. Eligibility and instructions can depend on the vessel and where it operates, so confirm the current requirements with the relevant program or authority rather than assuming one route applies to every boat.
What to do when a boat or radio changes owners
When selling or disposing of a radio-equipped vessel, the Coast Guard advises owners to delete the own-ship MMSI from the radio and cancel or transfer the MMSI registration as appropriate. This helps keep vessel and emergency-contact records associated with the correct boat and owner. The Coast Guard issued this advice in Marine Safety Information Bulletin 09-23, dated June 21, 2023. Follow the registration provider’s current instructions for the specific transfer or cancellation.

How the nine digits are organized
The Coast Guard’s 2026 explanation says the first three digits indicate the responsible administration or nation, while the remaining six are assigned to individual ships by that nation’s telecommunications authority. The number’s format identifies the MMSI as a maritime identity; it does not encode the vessel’s live position. See the U.S. Coast Guard Proceedings, Vol. 83, No. 1 (2026).
