Foldable phones need a little more care than conventional phones: their flexible inner screens can be damaged by sharp contact, trapped debris, or excess pressure. The safest habits are simple—keep the factory-installed inner-screen protector in place, check the display and hinge before folding, clean gently, and follow the guidance for your exact model.
Why foldable phones need different handling
A foldable’s inner display is flexible rather than a conventional rigid sheet of glass. Google says the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s flexible screen is softer than traditional phone screens, so sand, crumbs, fingernails, and sharp objects can damage it. Manufacturer guidance across brands likewise cautions against excess pressure and rough contact. These precautions apply broadly, but water and dust ratings, protector policies, and repair instructions are model-specific.
Common mistakes to avoid
Pressing the inner screen with a nail or hard object
Do not use a fingernail, pen, stylus not approved for that model, or other hard or pointed object on the inner screen. Avoid pressing hard on the crease or trying to flatten it. Samsung warns against sharp objects and excessive pressure, while Google notes the flexible screen’s softer surface. Folding the phone over debris or an object
Before closing the phone, inspect both display surfaces and the hinge or folding area. A card, coin, key, grain of sand, crumb, or other small object trapped between the halves can scratch or puncture the display or interfere with folding. Fine debris matters too, so do not assume the gap is clear just because nothing large is visible. Samsung, Google, and Motorola all advise keeping foreign material away from foldable displays and hinges.

Removing or adding an unapproved inner-screen film
Keep the factory-installed inner-screen protector in place unless the manufacturer’s service instructions for your exact model say otherwise. Do not peel it off or apply a generic third-party film on the assumption that it is compatible. Samsung, Google, and Motorola caution against removing the supplied protector or using unapproved replacements. Treating a water or dust rating as a guarantee
A rating is tied to a specific model and controlled test conditions. It does not make a phone waterproof or dustproof, and protection can diminish with normal wear, damage, or repair. Do not infer that a rated phone is safe at a beach, in a pool, in salt water, or under pressurized water; check the exact device’s official guidance before exposing it to liquids or dust.

Cleaning with rough materials or unapproved liquids
Use a clean, soft cloth for routine cleaning. Samsung specifically recommends a soft, dry cloth for a dusty or dirty hinge; Motorola advises avoiding abrasive cloths. Do not scrub the inner display or push material into the hinge. Guidance for liquids and disinfectants differs by model, so check the current official cleaning instructions for your phone before using anything damp or chemical. Google, Samsung, and Motorola provide device-specific cleaning advice in their support pages.
Trying to service the hinge yourself
Do not insert improvised tools into the hinge or try to repair it using generic online instructions. If the hinge makes an unusual sound, stops moving normally, or appears damaged, consult the manufacturer’s support or authorized repair channel for your model. Google recommends professional repair assistance; protector replacement and service routes also differ by manufacturer and device.

What to do before closing a foldable phone
- Check the inner display. Look for a card, coin, crumb, sand, or other object before folding.
- Check the hinge and folding area. Look for visible debris; do not probe the hinge with a tool.
- Close it gently. Do not force the halves together if something seems caught or the hinge does not move normally.
How to clean a foldable phone hinge
- Check your model’s current support instructions first. Cleaning methods and permitted liquids can vary.
- Use a soft cloth. Samsung advises a soft, dry cloth for a dusty or dirty hinge; Motorola advises against abrasive cloths.
- Wipe gently and keep tools out of the hinge. Avoid scraping, pressing debris into gaps, or using compressed or pressurized cleaning methods unless your exact manufacturer guidance permits them.
Can I remove the screen protector on my foldable phone?
Do not remove the pre-installed inner-screen protector unless the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact phone direct you to do so. Do not substitute an unapproved third-party film. If the protector is damaged or lifting, use the manufacturer’s model-specific replacement guidance; Samsung and Motorola direct users to authorized service for protector replacement.
