Instagram may be experimenting internally with a read-only mode for browsing profiles, but the feature is not confirmed or available to the public. An October 5, 2026 report says it could suppress likes, comments, messages, follows and active Story viewing while enabled. The report also says Instagram told Engadget that the experiment was not being tested with real users.
What the reported Instagram mode would do
According to an October 5, 2026 report republished from Android Headlines, reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi uncovered an early version of a proposed read-only browsing setting. The report describes it as a way to view profiles while preventing several account interactions:
- Liking posts
- Commenting
- Sending direct messages
- Following accounts
- Viewing active Stories
These details describe reported experimental behavior, not confirmed Instagram documentation. The report does not establish that all profile content would be visible in this mode or explain how the setting would work in practice.
Is it available now?
No. The report characterizes the feature as an internal experiment that was not being tested externally with real users when the article was published. It is not a public Instagram setting, and Instagram has not announced a launch date. The report’s account of what an Instagram spokesperson told Engadget has not been independently verified here, so the feature’s status and behavior remain attributed to that report.

Why a read-only mode could matter
Fewer accidental interactions
A mode that blocks actions such as liking or following could help someone browse without accidentally engaging with an account. That is a possible benefit, not a measured outcome; the report provides no data showing how often accidental interactions happen or whether this feature would reduce them.

Potential privacy and safety concerns
The report also raises the concern that removing visible interaction signals could make unwanted monitoring harder to notice. That is a potential risk, not a demonstrated result. The proposal should not be taken to mean that ordinary Instagram profile browsing is currently invisible, or that the reported feature has launched.
