Its developer announced a Flatpak release and a route for adding it to Steam so it can launch from Gaming Mode. The steps below reflect the developer’s October 6, 2026 instructions; they are not an independently verified compatibility guarantee.
What Archivist Browser does
Archivist Browser, developed by Mono Division’s Robert Lothian, is intended to make it easier to browse and play videos, texts, and audio from the Internet Archive. The developer described porting the app to Linux for Steam Deck and said a Flatpak build was ready to try. The developer’s launch thread and release announcement provide the app-specific information.
The mobile listing describes browsing and streaming films, audiobooks, music, and digital texts, along with discovery and organization features. Those store-listed features describe the mobile app; they should not be assumed to be present in the Linux build unless confirmed there. Google Play listing
How to install it on Steam Deck
The developer’s October 6, 2026 post identifies the announced Flatpak file as version 1.4.1 and gives this installation route. Check the current release post for the latest file and instructions before installing, because release details can change.

Valve describes Desktop Mode as a way to use the Deck like a PC, including installing applications and running programs outside Steam. Valve also cautions that software must support the Arch Linux distribution used by SteamOS. Steam Deck FAQ
Controls and browsing filter
The developer says the app supports mouse and keyboard, touchscreen input, and an optional gamepad control scheme. The release announcement also says results default to items tagged Creative Commons; its Settings option can turn that filter off to include more items. What the Flatpak route means for SteamOS
Valve documents Flatpak as an application deployment option that installs on writable disk space. Valve’s Desktop FAQ notes that installations made outside Flatpak may be wiped by a SteamOS update. This explains the value of the developer’s Flatpak distribution route, but does not establish that every build will work on every Deck or SteamOS version. Valve’s SteamOS Desktop FAQ
Does it work on Steam Deck?
The developer has announced a Linux Flatpak and described adding the app to Steam for use from Gaming Mode. The available information does not establish independent testing, performance measurements, a Deck-model or SteamOS-version compatibility matrix, or guaranteed playback across Internet Archive media formats. Treat the instructions as the developer’s reported setup path rather than a promise that installation or playback will succeed on every device.

Archivist Browser or the Internet Archive website?
The app is an alternative way to browse and play Internet Archive media, but the available evidence does not show that it is better than using the Archive website in a browser. The choice comes down to the app’s reported gamepad and touchscreen controls and its dedicated browsing experience versus using the website without a separate app installation. Decide based on the controls and workflow you prefer; app-specific playback and reading advantages over the website have not been established.
