It is a free, open-source planetarium with a realistic sky. If you plan observing sessions, control equipment or do astrophotography, KStars is the better fit. It is also free and runs on all three systems. Starry Night is a familiar name, but the vendor pages reviewed don’t show that it supports a current PC, Mac or Linux system (details below).

Stellarium: the best general-purpose sky simulator
The project calls it a “free open source planetarium for your computer.” It shows a realistic 3D sky as seen with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope. The latest version on the official Stellarium page is 26.3.
What it does
- Realistic Milky Way and atmosphere, constellations and multiple sky cultures
- Time control, so you can watch the sky at any date and location
- All-sky surveys, plus eclipse and solar-system simulation
- Ocular-view simulation, scripting and telescope control
The project says the default catalogues hold over 600,000 stars and over 80,000 deep-sky objects. Optional extra catalogues raise that to more than 220 million stars and more than 1 million deep-sky objects. These are the project’s own figures, not independent measurements of completeness or accuracy.

Best for: beginners, educators and anyone who wants a good-looking planetarium. Telescope control exists, but don’t assume it will connect to your particular mount.
KStars: planning, equipment and astrophotography
KDE describes KStars as free astronomy software for students, educators, amateur astronomers and enthusiasts. It combines a graphical sky simulation with internet data resources, calculation and prediction tools, and an observation planner. KDE also advertises a “Complete astrophotography workflow.” The download page lists version 3.8.4, released 9 August 2026, for Windows, macOS and Linux. On Linux it may also be in your distribution’s package manager or software center.

The overview says the simulation covers planets and up to 100 million stars. Its deep-sky count is given as 10,000 objects, but the KDE Applications listing gives a different figure, so treat that number loosely.
Device compatibility: KStars links to a device-support page from its overview. Check your exact camera, mount and operating system against it before you buy gear. General telescope support doesn’t guarantee your hardware will work.

The problem is compatibility. Both pages list requirements from the Windows 95/98/ME/2000/NT 4.0 era and classic Mac System 7.5. They mention no Linux support. They don’t establish that these editions run on modern Windows or macOS. Confirm the current edition, price and supported operating system with the vendor before paying.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose
- Define your main use: exploring, planning, equipment control or imaging.
- Check the exact build for your OS, including minimum version and processor type (for example, Windows ARM64 versus x86_64).
- Confirm your hardware is in the software’s supported-device documentation.
- Don’t pick on catalogue size alone. Star and object counts are publisher claims. A bigger number doesn’t make a program more accurate or easier to use.
Both free options cost nothing to try, so installing Stellarium and KStars side by side is a low-risk way to see which suits you. Neither replaces actual observing conditions. No independent head-to-head performance tests were found for these programs, so the recommendations rest on the projects’ published feature sets.
