You don’t need the command line for everything, and you don’t need to avoid it either. A command-line interface (CLI) earns its place when a program exposes a useful command, when you will repeat the work, or when you want to chain commands together. A graphical interface is the better choice when seeing the state of things, or having controls laid out in front of you, suits the task or the person doing it. Neither is inherently faster, more professional or more necessary. The documentation behind this article does not support a universal winner, and none of it measured task-completion times.
CLI, shell, terminal and tool: four different things
These words get used interchangeably, but Microsoft Learn separates them, and the split clears up a lot of confusion:
- Shell: the interactive command interface that accepts and executes your commands. It can also run scripts.
- Command-line tool: a standalone program built for a particular job and launched from a shell.
- Terminal: the application window that hosts a shell. Microsoft puts it this way: “A terminal is an application that provides a text-based window for hosting command shells.”
Apple Support describes the macOS Terminal app in similar terms: “Terminal is an app you use to perform tasks using a command line interface (CLI) in macOS.” Having a terminal app installed does not commit you to a command-line workflow. It is simply there when a task calls for it.
When a CLI is worth using
Repeatable work
The GNU Bash reference explains that shell scripts can combine commands and use programming features. Interactive shells add conveniences such as command history, line editing, job control and aliases. If you do the same thing weekly, such as renaming a batch of files or running the same set of checks, a saved script beats repeating clicks.

Combining commands
Shells let you chain commands and redirect their output. Ubuntu’s beginner tutorial notes that instructions found online often use shell commands, and it builds exercises around file handling and chaining commands. Pasteable commands are easier to share than “click the third menu, then the second tab.”
When the tool offers a command
Some programs expose their functionality as commands, either alongside a graphical front end or instead of one. AWS describes its open-source CLI as a way to interact with AWS services from a command shell, covering functionality that is also available in its browser-based management console. The choice there is about fit to the task, not replacement of one with the other.

When a graphical interface is the better choice
GitHub’s own CLI design guidance is candid about the limits of the command line. It says: “Command line interfaces are not as visually intuitive as graphical interfaces,” and that they “rely on memory, and are often unforgiving of mistakes.” These are product-design observations from GitHub’s documentation, not controlled findings. The same guidance recommends reducing cognitive load, asking for confirmation on riskier commands, keeping command language consistent, and making it easy to jump to the browser when a task suits it.
A GUI tends to suit you when:
- you need to see the state of something (a layout, a file tree, a dashboard) while you work;
- you are doing a one-off task you will never repeat;
- you are exploring and don’t yet know what the options are;
- a typo would be costly and the graphical tool offers previews or undo.
A quick way to choose
| Question about the task | Leans CLI | Leans GUI |
|---|---|---|
| How often will you repeat it? | Often | Once or rarely |
| Does it need automation or scripting? | Yes | No |
| Do you need to see the current state? | Not much | Yes |
| How easily can you discover the options? | You know the command or can read its help | You need menus to explore |
| What does a mistake cost? | Low, or the command has a dry-run or confirmation | High, and the GUI offers previews or undo |
| Your familiarity and setup? | Comfortable with typing and reading text output | Prefer pointing and visual cues |
This is a decision aid built from the factors the documentation raises, not a measured result.

What about speed?
It is common to hear that the command line is faster. The documentation reviewed here contains no comparative study of CLI and GUI completion times, so treat speed as dependent on the task and the user. Someone typing a command they know can be quick. Someone searching for the right flag is not. Likewise, a GUI is quick when the control is where you expect it.
Accessibility depends on the setup
W3C’s WCAG2ICT material, which applies web accessibility guidance to non-web software, discusses command-line interfaces, including context-sensitive help and structured output, and notes that assistive-technology support is still evolving. The practical takeaway is that neither “command lines are accessible” nor “command lines are inaccessible” holds universally. It depends on the specific application, its output, and your assistive tools. Choose the interface that works in your actual setup.

If you want to try it: a low-risk start
- Open your platform’s terminal. On macOS, use the Terminal app described in Apple Support’s guide. On Windows, Microsoft’s shell explainer is a good starting point. On Ubuntu, follow its beginner tutorial for getting to the command line.
- Learn navigation first. Learn to see where you are, list files and move between folders, so you know where a command will act before you run it.
- Practice basic file operations on a throwaway folder, not on your documents.
- Use the built-in help for each command before trying new options.
- Try chaining two commands once the basics are comfortable. This is where the CLI starts to pay off.
- Be cautious with copied commands. Read what a pasted command does before running it, especially anything that deletes or overwrites data.
Ubuntu’s tutorial also points to a free command-line learning book if you want to go deeper. A small subset of commands is enough to be useful; you don’t need to master the whole thing.
The Bottom Line
Use the command line where it pays: repeated tasks, scripts, chained commands, and tools that only offer commands. Use the graphical interface where seeing and exploring matters. Most people end up using both.
