A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The supported way to read an EPUB in Kindle on a Windows PC is to send the file to your Kindle library with Amazon’s Send to Kindle service. Then open the current Kindle desktop app and read it there. Amazon lists EPUB as a supported Send to Kindle file type, and sending a document this way has no additional cost. The older “Kindle for PC” app is no longer an option: Amazon says it isn’t supported as of June 30, 2026.
What to use: the current Kindle app, not Kindle for PC
Amazon now calls its desktop reader the Kindle app. Its help page, Install or Update the Kindle App for Desktop, states: “The Legacy Kindle app (previously called Kindle for PC) isn’t supported as of June 30, 2026.” That page lists Windows 11 as supported. Don’t install the legacy app from an old download link. Get the current app from Amazon’s own page.

How to get an EPUB into the Kindle app
Amazon’s personal document file types page lists EPUB among the formats Send to Kindle accepts. The workflow is to deliver the file to your Amazon library, not to open it from a local folder. Amazon’s documentation does not promise that every EPUB can be opened straight from a Windows folder in the current desktop app.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Install or update the Kindle app using the Amazon desktop-app page above, and sign in with the Amazon account you want the book attached to.
- Send the EPUB with Send to Kindle. Use Amazon’s current Send to Kindle option for your account. Amazon’s Send Books to Your Kindle E-Reader Manually page says Send to Kindle is available at no additional cost.
- Choose where it goes. Deliver it to your Kindle library so that your apps and devices can receive it.
- Sync and open the library in the desktop app. Look for the delivered personal document and open it. Amazon changes menu labels from time to time, so follow the on-screen prompts and Amazon’s live help instead of relying on a fixed button name.
If the book doesn’t appear
- Confirm you are signed in to the same Amazon account in the app and in Send to Kindle.
- Trigger a manual sync in the app and reopen your library.
- Check that the file is a real EPUB and not a renamed file of another type.
- Check Amazon’s live Send to Kindle help for current delivery and account troubleshooting. Amazon’s pages do not give a full list of fixes, and behavior can differ by account or region.
Kindle Previewer is not the reading app
Amazon’s Kindle Previewer can open EPUB files, so it can look like an easy reader. It is a separate tool for checking how a book may display on Kindle devices and apps. Use it if you are inspecting layout. For ordinary reading, use the Kindle app.

Reading versus publishing
Amazon KDP also accepts EPUB, but that is for authors. KDP’s manuscript format guidance and its Upload and Preview Book Content page cover preparing and previewing a book for sale. If you only want to read an EPUB you own, you don’t need a KDP account or any of those steps.

Can Kindle open EPUB files?
Yes, through Send to Kindle. Amazon lists EPUB as a supported personal-document type, so you send the file to your Kindle library instead of loading it directly.
