On a computer, open your Google Doc and choose Insert > Drawing > New. Add shapes, lines, text, or images in the drawing editor, then finish the drawing to place it in the document.
Create a drawing in Google Docs
- Open the document on a computer.
- Select Insert > Drawing > New.
- In the drawing editor, choose a tool and add objects to the canvas:
- For a shape, select Shape, choose a shape, then click and drag on the canvas.
- For a line or connector, select Select line and choose the line type.
- For text, choose Insert > Text box or Word art.
- You can also add images and format objects, including adjusting shapes’ size, fill, line color, thickness, and style.
- Finish the drawing to insert it into your Doc.

Create a drawing in Drive and add it to Docs
You can make a drawing separately in Google Drive, then insert it into a document:
- In Drive, select File > New > More > Google Drawings to create the drawing.
- In your Google Doc, choose Insert > Drawing > From Drive and select the drawing.
A drawing inserted from Drive is linked to its source. Select Update in the Doc to refresh it after changes to the source, or choose Unlink to detach it.

Use the drawing tools with a screen reader
Google documents keyboard shortcuts for menu search and opening alt text for a selected object:
- Open menu search: press Alt + / on Windows or ChromeOS, or Option + / on Mac.
- Open the alt-text dialog: select the object, then press Ctrl + Alt + y on Windows or ChromeOS, or Command + Option + y on Mac.
