When a DEV.to post shows “Comment deleted”, that is a placeholder where the comment appeared—not proof that its text was permanently erased. On the inspected pages, DEV’s confirmation describes the action as hiding a comment in the post while saying it remains visible through its permalink.
What does “Comment deleted” mean on DEV?
On the DEV comment pages examined, the comment’s body is replaced in the post by the words “Comment deleted.” The interface’s confirmation prompt describes the action as hiding the comment: “Are you sure you want to hide this comment?” It adds: “It will become hidden in your post, but will still be visible via the comment’s permalink.” DEV.to
That wording makes an important distinction: the post can show a placeholder even though the confirmation says the comment may still be seen at its direct link. It does not establish that the comment was permanently erased, or that every visitor can access its permalink.
What the placeholder does—and does not—tell you
- It tells you: the comment’s text is not displayed in that spot on the inspected post pages.
- It does not tell you: who took the action, whether it was the commenter or a moderator, or whether the comment was permanently deleted.
- It does not settle: whether permalink visibility differs for logged-in and logged-out visitors, or under other account or moderation conditions.
The prompt uses “hide,” while the visible replacement says “Comment deleted.” Those interface labels alone are not enough to infer the full handling or access rules for every comment on DEV.

What DEV’s comment API documentation establishes
Forem’s official API documentation describes GET /api/comments for retrieving threaded comments on articles or podcast episodes, and GET /api/comments/{id} for retrieving an individual comment with nested replies. The reviewed documentation does not specify how hidden comments are represented in API responses or define their visibility rules. Forem API documentation: comments
So the API reference is not evidence that a hidden comment is either available or unavailable through the API. It documents comment retrieval, but not the behavior of this placeholder.

How to interpret a DEV comment permalink
If you follow a comment’s permalink and see content, that is consistent with the confirmation prompt’s statement that a hidden comment can remain visible through its permalink. If the link does not show the comment, that alone does not identify why; the inspected interface text does not describe all access conditions.
The safest reading is narrow: the post displays “Comment deleted” in place of the comment, and DEV’s prompt says the hide action leaves it visible via its permalink. Do not treat the placeholder as proof of permanent deletion—or as proof that every permalink visitor can see the original text.
