Your Coding Agent Has a Network. Do You Know What It Did?

A coding agent’s network setting shows potential access, not what it actually did. Check the session’s egress rules, credentials, integrations, exceptions and available logs.

A coding agent can reach whatever its runtime and connected tools permit—but a “network access” indicator does not tell you which destinations it could contact, what credentials it could use, or what it actually did. To assess exposure, check the effective rules for the specific agent session, then look for activity logs and policy decisions where the product provides them.

What does it mean when a coding agent has network access?

It means the agent’s execution environment may be able to communicate with other systems. The practical reach depends on the product, where it runs, the operating system, session settings, and any organization policy. OpenAI’s sandbox security guidance puts the core issue plainly: “Agent-generated code can access the files, credentials, and network available to its environment.”

Network access can be useful for tasks such as installing packages or retrieving current information. It is also an outbound path: if the agent runs misleading instructions or compromised code, permitted connections could be used to send out data the environment can access. Anthropic likewise says effective sandboxing requires both filesystem and network isolation in its Claude Code sandboxing overview.

Permission and activity are different questions. A setting describes what should be possible under a policy; it does not prove that a connection was attempted, completed, or used to transmit particular data. Establishing what happened requires relevant records, and not every agent provides a complete network audit trail.

What to inspect in your agent’s setup

Check the actual runtime and session—not just a product’s general description. Controls and defaults can differ between a local command-line agent, an IDE agent, and a cloud session, as well as by operating system and organization policy.

  • Network scope: Find out whether outbound internet and local-network access are controlled separately. Check whether access is unrestricted, blocked, limited to package managers, or restricted to selected destinations.
  • Enforcement: Determine how the restriction is applied and whether subprocesses are subject to it. Proxy environment variables alone may not stop software that ignores them or opens sockets directly; OpenAI discusses this limitation in its Codex safety article.
  • Allowed actions: Ask what the agent can do at an approved destination. A domain allowlist is not necessarily read-only: Microsoft warns in its VS Code sandbox documentation that an allowed domain may support state-changing actions, including repository changes.
  • Credentials: Check what the process can read, including environment variables, Git or command-line credentials, keychains, and credentials supplied through proxies or connected tools. OpenAI advises keeping third-party credentials outside the environment where possible and notes that secrets injected into it are visible to agent-generated code. GitHub also documents credential controls alongside network and filesystem settings in its sandbox guidance.
  • Exceptions: Look for approval prompts or retry options that can run a blocked command outside the sandbox. VS Code documents a session-wide bypass that can remove file and network restrictions for later terminal commands in that session.
  • Connected tools: Inventory MCP servers and other remote integrations separately. Claude’s network settings documentation notes that MCP integrations can communicate even when code-execution network egress is disabled.
  • Records: Find out whether attempted and blocked requests, tool calls, approvals, destinations, and results are logged—and how long records are retained. Logging features vary; the cited documentation does not establish that every consumer agent captures every connection.

How to find out what the agent actually did

Start with the session’s available activity history, rather than inferring activity from a permission setting. OpenAI describes examining Codex logs for the user request, tool activity, approval decisions, results, and relevant network policy decisions or blocks in its safety article.

  1. Identify the exact product, runtime, operating system, and session under review.
  2. Open that product’s activity or session logs and locate the relevant time period. Look for tool calls, approvals, command results, and recorded network-policy decisions or blocked attempts.
  3. Compare those records with the effective network and credential settings for that same session, including any exceptions or connected tools.
  4. If logs do not record destinations or connection attempts, treat the activity as unverified. A policy setting alone cannot establish what was transmitted.

Available records can help answer what the agent attempted or what a policy blocked. They cannot establish more than they record, and the cited sources do not show that every coding agent keeps a comprehensive network history.

How to compare sandbox and network policies

The word “sandboxed” does not specify a complete policy. Use these questions to compare real configurations; they are a framework for evaluating controls, not a claim that every product offers each one.

Area What to ask Why it matters
Isolation boundary Does the agent run under a separate process policy, in a container or virtual machine, or in a remote environment? Is it isolated from other users and sessions? The boundary affects which host files and other workloads may be exposed.
Network scope Is outbound access off, unrestricted, limited to package managers, or destination-restricted? Is local-network access separate? “Internet access” can describe different scopes, and implementations vary.
Enforcement Is policy enforced by the operating system, a network namespace, or a proxy? Can child processes bypass it? A setting that depends on software honoring a proxy may not constrain every program.
Action scope Can the agent write or make other changes through allowed destinations? Are API methods or scopes restricted? A destination allowlist does not by itself make access read-only.
Credential handling Can the agent read tokens, environment variables, Git credentials, or a system keychain? Can a proxy broker credentials? Exposure depends partly on the authority those credentials provide.
Exceptions and integrations Can a blocked command run outside the sandbox after approval? Are MCP servers and remote tools governed separately? Fallbacks and separate connections may not share the same boundary.
Observability Are attempted, successful, and blocked connections recorded with tool activity and approval context? Policy describes intended permissions; records can help establish activity.

How to reduce unnecessary exposure

Grant only the access the task needs. OpenAI says its managed Codex network policy allows expected destinations, blocks unwanted destinations, and requires approval for unfamiliar domains. Anthropic describes a staged approach that begins with no egress, then adds package managers and selected domains in its network-settings guidance.

Apply the same least-access approach to credentials and integrations: keep powerful third-party secrets out of the agent’s environment where feasible, limit any credentials it can use to the required scope, and evaluate connected tools independently of shell or code-runner egress. A domain restriction can narrow where connections go, but does not alone restrict what the agent may do there.
