Jasper Smith’s people-removal tool keeps the output canvas at the original image’s dimensions, but it does not preserve every original pixel. Its model generates replacement content at 1K Standard or 2K HD Repair resolution; the browser scales that result up and composites it only inside the brushed mask. Pixels outside the mask are retained from the image as the browser decoded it, according to Smith’s description.
What “never downscales” means in this tool
The phrase refers to the dimensions of the finished canvas and the treatment of unmasked areas—not to native-resolution generation across the whole image. The inpainting model receives the full frame and a black-and-white mask, then returns a lower-resolution result. In the browser, the application draws the original into a canvas at its original dimensions, scales the generated result to that size, clips it using the mask’s alpha, and composites it over the source.

As Smith puts it, “Everything outside the brush stays identical to what the browser decoded from your file.” That is a description of his implementation, not an independently verified fidelity test. The brushed area is different: it contains generated pixels enlarged to fit the original canvas, so it does not retain the source detail that was removed.

So, if the output canvas is full size anyway, 2K buys a higher-resolution generated patch—not a larger file canvas or an across-the-board improvement to the photograph. Whether that patch looks better depends on the image and edit; the source article does not provide a benchmark or independent quality test.

How the browser and Cloudflare Worker divide the work
Smith describes the browser as responsible for the pixel-heavy compositing. It handles alpha transparency and antialiased mask edges, and subsequent edits use the latest full-size composite so earlier removals remain in the working image. The Worker is described as validating uploads, creating and polling model jobs, and copying results into Cloudflare R2. The final composite is uploaded separately; if that upload fails, the application offers a save-only retry.
The implementation uses Next.js 15 on Cloudflare Workers through @opennextjs/cloudflare. The article also identifies D1 for accounts, jobs, and the credit ledger; R2 for uploads, masks, and results accessed through the S3 SDK; Stripe for credit packs and monthly plans; and Google OAuth as the sign-in option. These are details of Smith’s reported stack, not a guarantee of the service’s current availability or security properties.

For job handling, Smith says the client creates UUID request IDs to avoid duplicate jobs or charges on retries, confirmed generation failures receive transactional refunds, and transient polling or download errors can be retried. Those are implementation choices he reports, not independently audited reliability results.

- Input cap: Smith reports a maximum of 25 megapixels or 20 MB per image. He gives the cap as a response to browser canvas memory constraints, especially on phones.
- Canvas memory: He estimates that a 25-megapixel image can require about 100 MB for raw RGBA pixel storage alone. That is his estimate; actual browser memory use can vary. He specifically notes that iOS Safari may refuse very large canvases.
- Metadata and color profiles: The output is PNG, and Smith says EXIF metadata and ICC color-profile information are not retained. If you depend on camera metadata or a particular color profile, keep the original and account for this change.
- Evidence limits: The author’s account does not establish independent image-fidelity results, a browser compatibility matrix, or a quality benchmark. The described preservation behavior should be understood as an implementation claim rather than a tested guarantee for every browser and file.
