Walking may help constipation, but it is only one part of self-care. Seek urgent medical care for rectal bleeding or blood in stool, constant or severe abdominal pain, inability to pass gas, vomiting, fever, or unexplained weight loss. If those warning signs are absent, consider gradual dietary and routine changes, review possible medication contributors with a professional, and ask a pharmacist or clinician about treatment if symptoms persist.
First, check what is happening and how urgent it is
Constipation is not measured only by how often you have a bowel movement. Hard, dry or lumpy stools, painful passage, and feeling that you have not emptied completely can also be signs. Fewer than three bowel movements a week is one possible feature, but frequency varies. These are symptoms, not a diagnosis of the cause. NIDDK’s constipation guidance and its symptoms and causes page were last reviewed in May 2018.
- Get prompt medical advice for rectal bleeding or blood in your stool, constant abdominal pain, inability to pass gas, vomiting, fever, lower back pain, or unintentional weight loss.
- Do not rely on exercise, extra fiber, or laxatives alone if symptoms are severe or concerning. A bowel obstruction and other causes need professional assessment; laxatives can be dangerous when constipation is due to an obstruction.
- Contact a clinician if the problem does not improve with self-care, keeps returning, or represents a notable change for you.
What to try when walking has not helped
Increase fiber gradually
Add fiber-rich foods over time rather than making a sudden, large change. NIDDK gives an adult target of 22 to 34 grams a day, depending on age and sex; this figure appears in guidance last reviewed in May 2018. Drink water and other liquids as you increase fiber so it can work effectively. If food changes are difficult, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether a fiber supplement is appropriate and follow its label, including fluid instructions. NIDDK’s treatment guidance and its page on eating, diet, and nutrition provide further detail.
Make time for an unhurried toilet routine
Try sitting on the toilet at a regular time, such as 15 to 45 minutes after breakfast. Allow enough time and respond when you feel the urge rather than putting it off. A small footstool that raises your knees above your hips is an optional positioning aid, not a treatment that works for everyone. NHS advice also recommends a regular routine and not delaying the urge; see its constipation guidance, last reviewed October 26, 2023.

Review medicines and other possible contributors
Some medicines or health circumstances may contribute to constipation. A pharmacist or clinician can help review your situation and decide whether a medicine or another factor could be involved. Do not stop or change a prescribed medicine without professional advice. Your age, pregnancy status, medical history, medicines, and symptom duration can all affect which next step is safest.
When to ask about a laxative
If self-care has not helped and you have no urgent warning signs, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether a short-term, nonprescription laxative is suitable. Products work in different ways and are not interchangeable for every person. Read and follow the product label; medical conditions, other medicines, and possible obstruction can change whether a product is appropriate. NHS guidance says most laxatives work within three days, and advises stopping nonprescription laxatives once constipation improves and not using them for longer than seven days without professional direction. The NHS laxatives page was accessed October 5, 2026; product details and suitability vary.

| Type | How it is generally used | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Bulk-forming or fiber supplements | Add bulk to stool. | Increase gradually and take with adequate fluid; ask a professional if unsure whether one fits your circumstances. |
| Osmotic laxatives | Help draw water into the bowel. | Follow the specific product directions and ask about suitability, especially if you have other health conditions or take medicines. |
| Stool softeners | Help soften stool. | Products and directions differ; use the label and professional advice rather than assuming one is right for everyone. |
| Lubricant laxatives | Help stool pass through the bowel. | Check the label and suitability with a pharmacist or clinician. |
| Stimulant laxatives | Stimulate bowel movement. | NIDDK says these should generally be reserved for severe constipation or when other treatments have not worked. |
The categories above are described in NIDDK treatment guidance and NHS laxative guidance. Mayo Clinic cautions that overuse of some laxatives can cause problems and that laxatives can interact with medicines; its guidance, published January 26, 2024, is titled “Nonprescription laxatives for constipation: Use with caution.” If a laxative does not help, symptoms worsen, or you need it beyond the label’s directions, contact a health professional rather than extending self-treatment.

Speak with a clinician if constipation does not go away with self-care or is long-term. NIDDK puts it plainly in its patient guidance: “If your constipation does not go away with self-care or if you have long-term constipation, speak with a doctor.” Persistent or recurring symptoms may need assessment of causes and treatment choices that general self-care advice cannot determine.
