Node’s HTTP interfaces support streaming without buffering an entire response, but that does not guarantee that every proxy, host, or network component avoids disk or memory buffering. Vite belongs in this design as development middleware—not automatically as the production video path.
What “zero-disk” means for a video proxy
Here, “zero-disk” means the application does not deliberately write the video body to a local file before forwarding it. It does not promise that the full deployment is disk-free, nor does it rule out buffering in a reverse proxy, hosting platform, or other component.
Node.js describes its HTTP interfaces as low-level and says they “never buffer entire requests or responses,” which lets an application stream data. That is a statement about Node’s HTTP API behavior, not an end-to-end guarantee about your application or infrastructure. See the Node.js HTTP documentation.
How the request and video data flow
- The client requests a video. The request reaches a specific Express route on your server.
- Express requests the media upstream. The route should use a configured, trusted upstream rather than accepting arbitrary destinations from the client.
- Node forwards the response as a stream. The application passes response data onward instead of intentionally collecting the entire body in memory or writing it to a file.
- The client consumes the response. The browser or other client receives media data as it arrives, subject to the behavior of the upstream and the intervening infrastructure.
This describes the architecture, not a complete, validated route implementation. In particular, a basic stream-forwarding path does not by itself establish correct handling of video seeking, partial responses, cancellation, or every response header.

Attach Vite to Express during development
Vite supports middleware mode, in which its Connect middleware can be mounted in an Express application. The documented setup uses Vite’s middleware interface, vite.middlewares. This lets your application control the main development server instead of running Vite as a separate server.
For an application that needs to handle HTML itself, Vite’s server options document middleware mode with appType: 'custom'. Follow the current Vite setup guidance for the HTML handling and server lifecycle that fit your application: Vite server options.

Vite’s SSR guide also recommends middleware mode when an application needs control of its main server and wants a development setup separated from production. Treat the Vite middleware as part of the development workflow; choose and configure the production video path separately. See the Vite SSR guide.
Video seeking and partial content need deliberate handling
Video players often seek to positions other than the start of a file. Supporting that behavior can require the proxy to handle range requests and upstream partial responses correctly. The Node and Vite sources cited here do not prescribe a complete range-handling implementation, so do not assume that simply forwarding a stream makes seeking work.

Before relying on the proxy for seekable video, verify the upstream’s protocol and the implementation’s behavior for range requests, partial responses, relevant headers, unsatisfiable ranges, multiple ranges, and client cancellation. Those details must be designed and tested for the actual upstream and client requirements; they are not established by the cited framework guidance.
Production decisions that affect safety and reliability
A streaming route still needs operational controls. These are design decisions for the specific deployment, not settings established by the cited documentation.

- Upstream trust and destination limits: restrict which media sources the proxy can contact. Avoid turning a client-controlled URL into unrestricted outbound access.
- Authentication and authorization: decide who may request each resource and whether upstream credentials must be protected or transformed.
- Timeouts and cancellation: decide how long to wait for the upstream and how to stop work when a client disconnects.
- Concurrency: set limits appropriate to expected traffic and available resources.
- Error handling: define what the client receives when the upstream fails, returns an unexpected response, or ends early.
- Deployment buffering: check whether reverse proxies, hosting layers, or other components buffer responses or write temporary data. Node’s streaming behavior alone cannot answer this for your stack.
An Express-compatible package such as http-proxy-middleware is available, but its existence does not establish correct range handling, cancellation, or header behavior for a particular video proxy. Check the current package documentation and test the configuration against your upstream. The package version reported on October 5, 2026 was 4.2.0; versions and documentation may change.

Node’s HTTP documentation also discusses proxy support for outbound HTTP clients. That concerns routing requests made by Node through a proxy; it is not the same thing as implementing an inbound Express route that streams video to a client. Node also warns that a configured proxy can observe connection metadata and, depending on transport and TLS handling, potentially content.
