An asynchronous USB DAC uses its own audio clock rather than timing its samples to the computer’s USB frame clock. The DAC sends rate feedback to the host, which adjusts how many samples it delivers. “Asynchronous” describes this timing arrangement—not a sound-quality rating or a guarantee that a particular DAC will work with every device.
What “asynchronous” means
USB audio travels through scheduled data transfers, but the USB schedule and the DAC’s audio sample clock do not have to be governed by the same timing reference. In an asynchronous USB audio endpoint, the device’s audio rate is tied to a clock outside the USB timing domain, such as a free-running clock inside the device. The endpoint cannot synchronize its audio timing to USB start-of-frame timing.
In playback, the DAC is the sink: it receives audio data from the host. It reports its desired data rate through explicit feedback, and the host adjusts the number of samples it sends. This rate matching helps keep the DAC’s buffer from running empty or overflowing. Audio remains sent through USB’s scheduled transfers; “asynchronous” does not mean the DAC receives data without host scheduling.
Asynchronous, synchronous and adaptive compared
USB Audio Class defines three endpoint synchronization types. They describe the relationship between audio timing and USB timing, not a ranking of sound quality.

- Plug and Play: No driver is required, just plug and play. USB bus-powered, no external power is required for this convenient sound card. *Note:Supports regular headphones with a resistance of less than 50 ohms, but does not support high-resistance headphones
| Type | Clock or rate relationship | In plain language |
|---|---|---|
| Asynchronous | The endpoint uses an external-to-USB or free-running device clock. An asynchronous sink provides explicit rate feedback. | The DAC’s audio timing is independent of USB frame timing; the host follows the DAC’s rate feedback. |
| Synchronous | The sample clock follows USB start-of-frame timing. | USB timing governs the endpoint’s sample timing. |
| Adaptive | The endpoint adapts its rate to the rate imposed at its interface, using an internal process to match its natural rate to the imposed rate. | The endpoint adjusts its audio rate to the incoming or requested data flow. |
“Isochronous” and “asynchronous” describe different things. Isochronous is the USB transfer type used for time-sensitive streams; asynchronous is the endpoint’s synchronization type. A stream can therefore use isochronous transfers while its endpoint is asynchronous.
Does an asynchronous USB DAC sound better?
The label alone does not establish that one DAC measures or sounds better than another. It describes how the endpoint handles audio timing and rate matching. The USB specifications define that behavior; they do not show that asynchronous operation eliminates all jitter or guarantees an audible improvement.

Nor does the term establish supported formats or host compatibility. For a particular DAC, check the manufacturer’s documentation for supported sample rates and formats, compatibility with your computer or other playback device, power requirements, and analog outputs. Compare those concrete specifications and, where available, measured performance rather than treating “asynchronous” as a quality grade.

The detailed synchronization explanation is in the USB-IF USB Device Class Definition for Audio Devices, Release 1.0, section 3.3, and the Universal Serial Bus Specification Revision 2.0, section 5.12.4.1.1 and its feedback discussion. The USB 2.0 specification says: “Asynchronous endpoints cannot synchronize to SOF or any other clock in the USB domain.” Here, SOF means start of frame.
