Unlike a regular SSD, it includes processing capability as part of the storage device. The goal is to handle supported work closer to where data resides, potentially reducing host processing and data movement—not to guarantee a speedup for every task.
What makes a drive a computational storage drive?
SNIA defines a CSD as a storage element containing persistent storage and one or more computational storage engines (CSEs). A CSE performs computational storage functions (CSFs): particular operations configured for execution by the engine. In other words, the label describes more than an SSD with a faster controller; computation is part of the device’s intended function. See SNIA’s explanation of computational storage and its dictionary definitions.
- Persistent storage: the drive retains data.
- Computational storage engine: the component that can process data.
- Computational storage function: the specific operation an engine is set up to perform.
How is a CSD different from a regular SSD?
A regular SSD stores data and serves it to a host system, where software typically processes it. A CSD also contains computational resources intended to run supported functions near the stored data. A conventional SSD is not automatically a CSD simply because it has an internal controller or performs routine device management.
The practical distinction is whether the device exposes computational storage functions that a system can configure and use—not merely whether the hardware contains a processor. A product comparison should therefore establish which functions are supported, what software is required, and whether the host platform can use them.

Why put computation near storage?
In a conventional workflow, data travels from storage into host memory or compute resources for processing. For data-heavy work, that movement can consume time and system resources. Computational storage aims to execute supported operations closer to the data, potentially sending a result to the host rather than requiring all source data to move there. NVM Express describes the approach in terms of host offload and reduced data movement (NVM Express Computational Storage overview).
SNIA lists AI, big data, content delivery, databases, and machine learning among potential application areas. These are examples of workloads that may benefit, not a claim that every CSD accelerates them. Results depend on the match between a workload and a device’s functions, resources, interface, and software.

CSD, CSP, and CSA: what do the terms mean?
Computational storage is the broader architecture; a CSD is one form within it. SNIA’s dictionary distinguishes these related terms:
| Term | Meaning | Persistent storage in the component? |
|---|---|---|
| Computational Storage Drive (CSD) | A storage element with one or more computational storage engines. | Yes |
| Computational Storage Processor (CSP) | A component with computational storage engines for an associated storage system. | No |
| Computational Storage Array (CSA) | An array containing one or more computational storage engines. | Not stated in the definition |
| Computational Storage Device (CSx) | A broader category that includes a CSD, CSP, or CSA. | Depends on the device form |
These definitions are from the SNIA dictionary; the terms should not be used interchangeably.

What do standards mean for compatibility?
SNIA reports published v1.1 versions of its Computational Storage Architecture and Programming Model and Computational Storage API. Its technical work group identifies interoperable behavior and interfaces for deployment, provisioning, management, and security as goals. Published specifications do not establish that every vendor implements them or that products interoperate in every configuration. For a particular CSD, check its implementation and the host software and platform it requires. See SNIA’s computational-storage standards page and its technical work group information.
