What Is EDID? VESA Extended Display Identification Data Explained

EDID is display-identification data that helps a connected computer, console or other video source configure its output for a monitor or screen.

EDID stands for Extended Display Identification Data. It is information a display makes available to a connected video source so the source can identify the display’s physical and performance attributes and configure its output accordingly. EDID is not a cable or connector; it works with interfaces such as VGA, HDMI and DisplayPort.

What does EDID do?

A display’s identification data is stored in its EEPROM. A connected source—such as a computer, game console, set-top box or video player—can read that data to learn about the display and tailor the video stream to its capabilities. This exchange helps make automatic display configuration and plug-and-play operation possible. VESA describes this role in its 2013 explanation of DisplayID and display identification data.

EDID is separate from the connection carrying the video signal. VESA says display identification works with established interconnect standards, including VGA, HDMI and DisplayPort, rather than being a connector standard itself. VESA’s 2017 announcement describes this plug-and-play role.

EDID and E-EDID: what is the difference?

EDID expands to Extended Display Identification Data. E-EDID expands to Enhanced Extended Display Identification Data. VESA’s 2023 Adaptive-Sync Display CTS glossary groups EDID and E-EDID as legacy display-identification structures. The names refer to related forms of display-identification data, but they should not be treated as interchangeable expansion of one acronym. VESA Adaptive-Sync Display CTS r1.1a (2023).

How EDID relates to DisplayID

VESA describes DisplayID as an evolutionary advancement of EDID and, in its later glossary, identifies DisplayID as the current and recommended approach to describing display identification data. That does not mean EDID has disappeared: VESA’s 2017 announcement said EDID remained viable for lower-resolution devices and that products using older EDID structures could coexist with DisplayID products.

DisplayID uses a modular data-block structure. In its 2017 announcement of DisplayID 2.0, VESA highlighted support for newer capabilities including higher resolutions, HDR and adaptive refresh. Those statements describe that announcement and version; they do not establish that every display or every later revision supports the same capabilities. Which identification format a device uses depends on its hardware and firmware. A user cannot independently switch a monitor from EDID to DisplayID simply by changing its cable.

What the definition does not specify

EDID is a family of display-identification structures, not one universal set of fields with identical contents on every display. The definition alone does not specify revision-specific layouts, field encoding, checksums or how extensions are handled. VESA lists EDID-related materials among its standards resources, but a listing does not by itself establish the technical rules for a particular device or interface.
