You’ll need a DEVUP AI API key and a current model ID. The steps below configure Chat Completions; DEVUP AI also documents a separate Responses API example, so match the endpoint and protocol to the model you choose.
What you need before setup
- VS Code with its native Chat panel.
- A DEVUP AI API key from the DEVUP AI dashboard.
- A model ID from the current DEVUP AI VS Code guide or model catalog. The vendor’s quickstart describes API access as requiring a base URL, API key, and model ID.
DEVUP AI’s general OpenAI-compatible base URL is https://api.devupai.com/v1. For the Chat Completions model entry shown here, however, the URL must be the full endpoint: https://api.devupai.com/v1/chat/completions. Don’t substitute the base URL for that full path.
Add DEVUP AI as a VS Code Custom Endpoint
- Open the native Chat panel in VS Code.
- Open the model picker above the chat input and select Manage Models.
- Select Add Models, then Custom Endpoint.
- For the example in this section, set API Type to Chat Completions.
- Name the endpoint group and enter your DEVUP AI API key when VS Code prompts you.
- In the
modelsarray of thechatLanguageModels.jsonfile VS Code opens, add a model entry. This vendor example uses the IDdeepseek-ai/DeepSeek-V4-Pro:

}- Save the file, then choose the model in the Chat picker.
The example’s token limits and feature flags are for that model, not universal DEVUP AI defaults. For another model, use its exact catalog ID, set vision and toolCalling according to its capabilities, and use input and output limits that fit its context window. DEVUP AI’s guide says their sum must not exceed that window.
Choose the API protocol that matches the model
The setup above uses Chat Completions and its full /v1/chat/completions endpoint. DEVUP AI’s guide also provides a GPT-5.4 mini example using the Responses API: its model entry sets apiType to responses and uses https://api.devupai.com/v1/responses. That example is documented for Ask mode; don’t assume every model or API type supports the same VS Code modes. Check the model’s current DEVUP AI documentation before configuring it.

What works without GitHub sign-in
DEVUP AI says models added through Custom Endpoint can respond in Copilot Chat even after you sign out of GitHub. Features that depend on GitHub services, such as inline suggestions, still require a GitHub account. For Agent mode, the chosen model must support tool calling, and its entry must have toolCalling enabled.
Fix common setup problems
- 401 or authentication error: Enter the API key as-is when VS Code prompts for it, as directed by the DEVUP AI guide.
- Model not found: Check that the
idexactly matches the identifier in the DEVUP AI catalog. - Agent mode does not use workspace tools: Confirm that the selected model supports tool calling and that its model entry sets
toolCallingtotrue. - Context-limit error: Adjust
maxInputTokensandmaxOutputTokensto the selected model’s context window; their sum must not exceed it. - Custom Endpoint is missing: DEVUP AI’s guide does not specify a minimum VS Code version or compatibility range. Check the options in your installed VS Code rather than assuming a particular version is supported.
Custom Endpoint is not MCP or a third-party extension
The Custom Endpoint procedure adds a model to VS Code’s Chat model picker. VS Code’s MCP support is a separate way to connect agents to tools, prompts, and resources; it is not the method for adding a DEVUP AI model. DEVUP AI also lists integrations for tools such as Cline, Continue, Cursor, and Zed, but those are separate setup paths and aren’t needed for this native VS Code workflow.
