Choose diff3 for a command-line three-way comparison or merge, Meld for a graphical view of files or directories, and vimdiff if you already work in Vim and want to compare or resolve changes there. The best fit depends on how you want to inspect changes—not on a documented universal winner for speed, ease or accuracy.
How the three tools differ
| Tool | Interface | Documented strengths | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| diff3 | Command line | Compares three files and can merge two changed versions against a shared ancestor. | Command-line workflows, scripts and users who do not need a visual editor. |
| Meld | Graphical application | Compares two or three files or directories; users can move content between sides or edit files. | Visual review, moving changes between files, and directory comparison. |
| vimdiff | Vim windows and buffers | Compares multiple file versions in Vim; Git can use it to resolve conflicts in configurable panes. | People comfortable navigating and editing in Vim who want to stay in that environment. |
The comparison reflects documented capabilities, not hands-on testing or a performance benchmark. No cited source establishes that one tool is universally faster, easier or more accurate.
What a three-way merge means
A three-way merge compares two changed versions with their common ancestor. The ancestor matters: it lets the tool distinguish edits made independently from content that was already present in the starting version. When changes overlap in a way the tool cannot resolve automatically, a person must review the conflict.
Using GNU diff3
GNU diff3 compares three files and can combine the changes in two newer versions against an older shared version. In the conventional merge ordering, the inputs are mine older yours: the second file is the ancestor, and the first and third are the changed versions. GNU calls a conflict where all three inputs differ an “overlap.” Its documentation explains that merge behavior depends on the relationship among the inputs, so the generated result and any conflict markers still need review. GNU diff3 offers options to show changes, mark or select conflict classes, and produce merged output. Its documented exit status is 0 for success, 1 when conflicts were found, and 2 for trouble. That distinction is useful in scripts: a status of 1 signals conflicts rather than an ordinary clean merge. Check the manual for the exact options supported by the installed version.
When Meld is the better choice
Meld presents two- or three-way comparisons in a graphical interface. Its official help describes comparison of files and directories, with the ability to move content between them or edit files manually. That directory view is a practical differentiator when you need to inspect more than one file at a time. Meld official help.

Git documents Meld as both a mergetool and a difftool. Git’s mergetool documentation also describes optional auto-merge behavior: when enabled and supported by the installed Meld version, non-conflicting portions can be merged automatically while conflicts remain highlighted for a person to decide. Whether that behavior is available depends on the installed Git and Meld versions and configuration; check Git’s current documentation before relying on it. Git mergetool documentation.
When vimdiff is the better choice
Vim’s diff mode can display differences among two to eight versions of the same file. Starting Vim with vimdiff is the documented straightforward way to open files in diff mode. This is Vim’s comparison capability; it does not mean every Git merge opens eight panes. Vim 9.2 reference manual: diff mode.

For Git’s documented vimdiff mergetool, the default is a four-window layout. LOCAL, BASE and REMOTE are read-only buffers for the current branch, common ancestor and incoming branch; MERGED is the writable result. Git permits layout customization and documents variants such as gvimdiff and nvimdiff. The arrangement gives Vim users direct access to the base version as well as both changed sides, but working across several panes is less familiar if you do not already use Vim. Git mergetool documentation.
Choosing one for Git
Git documents Meld and vimdiff as mergetool choices and supports both as difftools. The right decision turns on the review experience you prefer: a graphical overview, a command-line operation, or Vim panes that keep editing in your existing workflow. Git’s defaults are configurable, so an initial layout is not necessarily the only one available. Git difftool documentation.

Before settling on a Git setup, consider whether you want the ancestor visible, how easily you can move between conflict sections, how much screen space the panes need, and whether you prefer a graphical overview or remaining inside an editor. Git and tool behavior can vary by installed version and configuration; consult the documentation for your versions.
