Microsoft’s documentation does not list AVIF as an accepted format for the AI Builder image and document workflows covered here. The supported formats depend on the feature: convert the image to a format listed for the workflow you are using, then check that workflow’s size and dimension limits.
AI Builder image formats and limits by workflow
AI Builder has separate image and document paths; their format lists and limits are not interchangeable. Microsoft’s current feature documentation lists the following requirements:
| # | Preview | Product | Price | |

Image to PDF Converter | Buy on Amazon |
| Workflow | Documented input formats | Relevant limits and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Image or document input to a prompt | PNG, JPG, JPEG, and PDF | 25 MB total for all files passed to the prompt. Microsoft also notes regional availability and possible usage limits or capacity throttling. Microsoft Learn: Add inputs to your prompt (2025-07-16). |
| Custom object-detection training | JPG, PNG, and BMP | Maximum 6 MB per image; minimum width and height of 256 pixels. Microsoft suggests starting with at least 15 images per object; this is guidance, not a strict requirement or accuracy guarantee. Microsoft Learn: Collect images (updated 2026-01-14). |
| Prebuilt image-description model | JPG, JPEG, PNG, and BMP | Maximum 4 MB; dimensions must be greater than 50 by 50 pixels. The model is marked preview. Microsoft Learn: Image description prebuilt AI model (preview) (updated 2026-01-14). |
| Document-processing model training | JPG, PNG, or PDF | Maximum input document size is 20 MB; image dimensions must be between 50 by 50 and 10,000 by 10,000 pixels. TIFF is not accepted for training, although Microsoft says it can be used after training in a Power Automate cloud flow. This is a document-processing path, not prompt image input. Microsoft Learn: Requirements and limitations for document processing models (updated 2026-01-14). |
Microsoft’s overview explains that AI Builder includes different model types and scenarios; check the documentation for the specific feature rather than applying one workflow’s rules to every upload. Microsoft Learn: AI models and business scenarios (updated 2026-01-14).
How to prepare an AVIF image for AI Builder
- Identify the workflow. Determine whether the image is going into a prompt, object-detection training, image description, or document processing.
- Convert or export the AVIF. Use PNG or JPEG where that format appears in the workflow’s accepted list. For document processing, use JPG, PNG, or PDF. The cited Microsoft documentation does not endorse a particular third-party converter.
- Check the converted file against that workflow’s limits. Verify the applicable file-size and dimension requirements in the table above; for prompt inputs, the 25 MB limit applies to all files combined.
- Try the converted file in the intended feature. If it is rejected, confirm the selected workflow and its documented requirements before troubleshooting the conversion itself.
What Microsoft’s documentation establishes about AVIF
AVIF does not appear in the accepted-format lists cited above. That means direct AVIF support is not documented for these specific paths; it does not establish a universal prohibition across every AI Builder model, connector, or future release. A converted format explicitly listed for the feature is the practical choice.
