WKWebView setup involves more than displaying a page: configuration is applied when the view is created, website data can persist, and navigation, native UI, and JavaScript interaction each have distinct APIs. Here are six practical details to account for when building a WebKit view in an Apple-platform app.
1. Configure the web view before creating it
Set up WKWebViewConfiguration first, then pass it to the WKWebView initializer. Apple’s documentation says configuration settings are incorporated when the web view is created; they are not a general set of options that can all be changed dynamically afterward. Plan the configuration as part of initialization rather than assuming you can retrofit it later. See Apple’s WKWebViewConfiguration and WKWebView references.

2. Choose website-data persistence deliberately
The default WKWebsiteDataStore stores website data persistently. If the view should use nonpersistent website storage, Apple provides WKWebsiteDataStore.nonPersistent(); assign the selected store to the configuration before initializing the web view. This is a storage choice, not a guarantee about every privacy property of an app or its other data handling.
| Store choice | Documented behavior | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Default website data store | Stores website data persistently, according to Apple’s WKWebsiteDataStore documentation. | When the app expects website state to persist. |
WKWebsiteDataStore.nonPersistent() |
Apple documents this option for private browsing; assign it through WKWebViewConfiguration.websiteDataStore before creating the web view. |
When the app needs nonpersistent website storage. |
3. Rendering and browser behavior are separate concerns
WKWebView displays web content, while its delegates let the app respond to navigation and web interactions. The navigation delegate is used to control or track navigation. The UI delegate supports native interface elements prompted by webpage interactions. Decide which behavior the app needs instead of treating display and browser policy as the same feature. Apple describes these roles in its WKWebView documentation.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
4. Use the content controller for native and webpage-script coordination
WKUserContentController is the designated coordinator for interactions between native code and webpage scripts, as well as other webpage content. It is exposed through the web view configuration. Use that API as the integration point when designing native-to-web or web-to-native behavior; the cited API description establishes its coordinating role, not a full security checklist. See Apple’s WKUserContentController and WKWebViewConfiguration documentation.
5. App-bound navigation is a specific limit, not a universal link policy
The limitsNavigationsToAppBoundDomains configuration property limits navigation to pages within the app’s domain. Its documented scope is specific; do not treat it as a general replacement for navigation-delegate policy or assume it covers every navigation-control requirement. Apple describes the property in its limitsNavigationsToAppBoundDomains reference.

6. Select the loading method that matches the content
WKWebView supports loading a request, an HTML string, or a local file. These routes suit different content origins: a request for content addressed by a URL, an HTML string for markup supplied to the view, or a local-file load for content stored on the device. Apple also exposes isLoading and estimatedProgress. The latter is an estimate of web-load progress, not proof that unrelated application work—such as data processing or a separate native operation—has finished. See Apple’s WKWebView API reference.
