9 Ways to Fix Microsoft Teams Won’t Open in Windows 11 or 10

Try these nine troubleshooting steps in order when Microsoft Teams won’t open in Windows 11 or 10, starting with quick checks before repair or reinstall.

If Microsoft Teams won’t open, try the low-risk fixes first: quit any background instance, restart Windows, and use Teams on the web while you troubleshoot. Then clear the Teams cache, try Windows’ Repair option, and move to Reset or reinstall only if needed. These are diagnostic steps, not nine guaranteed fixes; the Settings options vary by app and Windows version.

Try these fixes in order

Start with actions that are quick and unlikely to change local app data. If a step gets Teams working, there is no need to continue down the list.

1. Quit Teams completely and reopen it

Teams may still be running in the background even if its window is closed. Right-click the Teams icon in the taskbar notification area and choose Quit, then launch Teams again from Start. Microsoft documents quitting and restarting as a way to manually restart the Windows app: Sync Microsoft Teams.

2. Restart your PC

Choose Start > Power > Restart, then try Teams again after Windows starts. Restarting is a general Windows app troubleshooting step, not a diagnosis specific to Teams; Microsoft includes it in guidance for programs that cannot be installed or removed: Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed.

3. Use Teams on the web as a temporary route

Open Teams on the web and sign in with your work or school account. Microsoft recommends the web app as a fallback when the desktop app has trouble: I can’t reconnect to Microsoft Teams. If the browser version works, you can continue using it while you troubleshoot the desktop client; this does not by itself identify the cause of the desktop failure.

4. Clear the Teams cache

Microsoft’s documented Windows cache procedure applies to the Teams installation using the path below. Quit Teams first. In File Explorer’s address bar, enter %appdata%MicrosoftTeams, press Enter, and delete the contents of that folder. Then reopen Teams and sign in.

Microsoft says clearing this cache removes web-client cached content such as icons, thumbnails, local message history, display images, and add-ons. It does not uninstall Teams. If the folder is missing, do not substitute a different folder by guesswork: Teams packaging and support instructions can change. Follow Microsoft’s current guidance for the client installed on your PC: I can’t reconnect to Microsoft Teams.

  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

5. Repair Teams from Windows Settings

Repair is available only for some apps. Open the Advanced options for Teams using the path for your Windows version, then select Repair if it appears. Microsoft says Repair is intended to fix an app without changing its data: Repair apps and programs in Windows.

  • Windows 11: Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Teams menu (three dots) > Advanced options > Repair.
  • Windows 10: Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Teams > Advanced options > Repair.

If Teams is not listed or Advanced options is unavailable, this route may not apply to that installation.

6. Reset Teams only if Repair is missing or did not help

Use the same Advanced options page and choose Reset if Windows offers it. Reset is a more disruptive option than Repair. Microsoft’s general instructions do not specify exactly what a reset removes for every Teams installation, so assume you may need to sign in again and avoid relying on local app state being preserved. See Microsoft’s Repair apps and programs in Windows guidance.

7. Install an available Teams update

This step requires Teams to open far enough to show its update control. If an update is offered, select Update and restart Teams. Microsoft says the desktop app updates automatically when an update is available and Teams is idle; you can also use the in-app update option when it appears. Details: Update Microsoft Teams.

8. Uninstall and reinstall Teams

Use this after the lower-impact checks. In Windows, go to Settings > Apps, find Teams, and choose Uninstall; the wording and app list layout vary between Windows 10 and 11. Reinstall Teams from the same official source you originally used, or follow Microsoft’s Teams troubleshooting instructions: I can’t reconnect to Microsoft Teams. Microsoft also lists uninstalling and reinstalling among general Windows program troubleshooting steps: Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed. If this is a work- or school-managed device, ask your IT administrator before removing a managed installation.

9. Troubleshoot Windows only if other problems point beyond Teams

If Windows Update or other apps are also failing, use the relevant Windows troubleshooter or ask your administrator for help. Microsoft provides a Windows Update Troubleshooter. Do not use Reset this PC just to address an isolated Teams launch problem: Microsoft’s recovery guidance prioritizes less disruptive options and warns that some recovery choices can cause data loss: Recovery options in Windows.

What to do if none of the steps works

Note whether Teams shows an error, stays on a blank screen, or never appears, and whether Teams on the web works. Share those details with your workplace or school IT team if the device or account is managed. For a personal device, use Microsoft’s Teams and Windows support routes rather than making broader system changes based on a single app failure.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. That lifecycle change is important for ongoing security and support, but it does not establish why Teams failed to open on a particular PC. See Microsoft’s Windows app repair and lifecycle information.
